    (13) Panthers Derrick Harvey* DE Florida The Panthers need to prepare for Mike Rucker's retirement and Julius Peppers' possible money-related departure. Harvey can be a good pass-rush specialist, learning well behind both Rucker and Peppers for his rookie season.

    (43) Panthers Sam Baker T USC The Panthers will also consider defensive tackle after trading away Kris Jenkins, but they also need an offensive tackle who can challenge for playing time early in his career.

    (67) Panthers Chris Johnson RB E. Carolina (from N.Y. Jets) It's uncertain if DeAngelo Williams can hold up as a full-time starter. Johnson is an explosive backfield option.

    (74) Panthers Anthony Collins* T Kansas The Panthers need offensive line depth, especially at tackle. The very athletic Collins is still developing as a player.

    (109) Panthers Barry Booker DT Va. Tech

    (141) Panthers Martin Rucker TE Missouri (from N.Y. Jets)

    (181) Panthers Dominique Barber S Minnesota

    (221) Panthers Todd Blythe WR Iowa St.

    (241) Panthers Bo Ruud OLB Nebraska

    (250) Panthers Travis Key S Michigan St.

Certainly a lot of solid, name type prospects here. Harvey, Baker, Johnson, and Rucker were all considered top 50 type players at various points. Collins wasn't far behind.

It adds beef, though something does make me concern a bit for Baker. Collins, IMO, will be better than him, though it'll be in time because he's a two-year starting junior. As well, both Baker and to a more extreme level Booker are slight players - Baker is barely 300 and Booker 285, despite each being tall players. Still, you have a pair of guys to fight for one tackle spot, both of which that can contribute. Not a bad thing, and Booker would be a good interior rusher more toward what we hoped of Moorehead.

Johnson in the 3rd is better value, and does add both playmaking and a lot of speed. He's a natural receiver, too. But he'd be somewhat situational, too. So I don't know what to think. He's a natural football player and would help out in a lot of areas, but I do worry that he's more of what some people worry about with DW - too lacking in bulk. DW doesn't actually have that problem at 5'9 220, but 5'11 195 is small.

I do like Rucker, and it sucks to see him continue to fall out of the first 75, because I think he's better than that and a good all-around player. He would give us a blocker there, and I feel like he's as good a receiver as Rosario. I don't know if I'd pick a TE, with two young guys there, but I wouldn't turn it down if he were here.

Barber is in a pedegreed family, of course. He has instinct, ability, but he's slow, and he doesn't have short range burst either, or fluid hips so he could at least get into the route. He's another Salley.

Blythe is an interesting, big, slow, aware slot type guy.

I like the first four rounds pretty well. Harvey fills a big need. Baker is OK in the second round but I would prefer Nicks is he is there. I have no problem adding a RB in the third round but I complete reject the notion that DW can not carry the load. We do need depth though. Collins is probably a good pick that late. I think one of those guys might end up at guard under this scenario. If they had taken a safety instead of a running back I would really like this.

I'm starting to develop a distaste for USC and Va. Tech players.

That would be a pretty damn good draft, IMO.
