That $129 cap figure being reported assumes Davis' roster bonus, they're not in as bad a shape as everybody is reporting, if I had to guess, it will be reworked into future bonuses, and his annual will be significantly reduced. extend Smith and Gamble, rework Wharton and they'll have plenty.

Had they not let all the OL players walk that were reserves, I would've been okay with Wharton being cut.

Option bonuses are pro-rated, so only $1.6 million of it is toward that 2012 cap figure (plus whatever his base salary is).

If we cut him before we pay him the option bonus then will we save the whole amount over the next few years? If so it is probably a good idea to do it.

They will either do that (which i doubt, because the remaining portion of his $7 mil bonus accelerates to the '12 cap) or agree to delay the option bonus to a later date/year or eliminate it altogether. That'll probably save somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 mil to this year's cap.

Right, it's gonna have to be a restructure. Cutting him will fuck us on $. It's really not an option.

Unfortunately I think that if the compromise was just to eliminate the bonus then it would have been done already. I'm guessing that TD's agent doesn't want to let go of that money and is therefore trying to get Hurney to agree on converting the bonus instead of eliminating it so that the team gets temporary relief now while still owing that much or more over the long-term.

And again, none of this was even necessary since Thomas Davis was not a free agent last season. Hurney chose to give him a $35.5 million extension, and he is probably the one who floated the story to Yasinskas and others that the team could get out of it easily if they wanted to, which was never actually true. His status as a "salary cap expert" was never deserved. He is incompetent at every aspect of his job.

As of Noon ET Tuesday, Jordan Senn's agent, Arthur B. Weiss, said the Panthers had yet to offer the LB a deal. “They're not offering (deals to) anybody,” Weiss said. “They need to restructure Thomas Davis' deal (five years, $36.5 million). That's screwing them up and I don't think he'll play a down this season.”

Okay, what's the deal, people can sign at 4PM EST?

Were re-signs of potential UFAs supposed to happen before midnight or up until 4?
