NFL | Upshaw reveals possible salary cap figures
    Wed, 22 Feb 2006 19:40:08 -0800

Todd Archer, of the Dallas Morning News, reports NFLPA executive director Gene Upshaw revealed what he thinks the salary cap will be for the 2006 season. Upshaw believes the salary cap will rise to between $102 million and $104 million if a new collective bargaining agreement is reached. He feels the cap will be between $92 million and $95 million without a new agreement.

Players will just demand more. I don't think it would make any huge differance in being able to retain and bring in free agents.

an extra $10.0m per team completely changes the complexion of FA this year.

I just think the players and agents knowing this lessens the effect. Every other team has the same extra 10 million as well.

I think it sort of justifies some of the higher contracts of the last year or so that were used to lock up key players around the league. I can see how it would have the greatest benefit to teams with horrible cap situations.

A couple high priced FAs might push a little harder on their original teams. Are players going to get 10% more because of the cap change? No.

in reality it helps getting Witherspoon done, assuming of coarse that we actually want to do that. hypothetically speaking, it would give us the cap room to chase Alexander or Bentley or insert other player we currently can't afford.

It might help some, but remember that we'll need a lot of that extra space to fill up the rest of the roster and to sign our draft picks. I think the real impetus is the salary cap nightmare some of the teams will go into without a new CBA. Heck, I don't know if the Redskins can possibly get under the cap without a new deal since hits won't be able to be split between '06 and '07.

High dollar cases, like Witherspoon has the potential to be, or higher cases like Alexander or Bentley, are rarely that big a problem to get under the cap initially. The Deion Sanders rule changed that a bit (not really all that much - just requires a bit more up front), but the end result is that fiscal responsibility and weighing worth v/s cost are the deciding factors. If you really want to pay someone outrageously, you can find a way.
