Panthers | Mathis could be benched for Week 2
    Tue, 12 Sep 2006 15:44:08 -0700

Steve Reed, of the Gaston Gazette, reports Carolina Panthers OL Evan Mathis could be in danger of being benched in favor of OL Geoff Hangartner in Week 2. Mathis was the starter in Week 1, but was benched in the second half.

I've never heard of Maser benching a player that quickly. Did Mathis really suck that bad?

I remember the announcers pointing him out for doing well in pulling for a running play.

Something happened to my DVD recording attempt, ran out at the end of the 1st quarter (must have had my suck blocker button turned on).

But I saw about 8 or so plays of offense. Mathis got totally beat on pass protection once in the first series, and had an offsides penalty a couple plays later. Looked good on a Foster 9 yard gain (pulling) and not awful on the others I saw.

We looked decent at first and had some plays blocked. One Foster stop in the backfield came from a delayed blitz between Mathis and Gross where Mathis was doubling the DT with Hartwig. LB came in untouched. I wouldn't have any way to know, but suspect there were problems with some line calls given Hartwig is new and Mathis was playing in his first game.

Anybody else care to look for a few plays just prior to him getting yanked?

I'll take a look, but I find it hard to believe that anyone could be worse than Hangartner. I can't understand why Montgomery wouldn't get the first look.

Didn't Mathis have a couple of false starts?

I have refused to rewatch the game, but I did see a lowlight. I think Mathis gave up a sack, with a guy blowing by him, right before he got yanked.

I wouldn't necessarily say that means he won't start, though. Many times good run blockers arent the best pass protectors.

MAYBE, they pulled him in the 4th because they knew they would be passing more. Fox did say it was a situational substitution.

I want the guy to start. He and Hangartner are both going to make mistakes.

So do I. We need his strength inside desperately.

And is anyone else besides me disappointed in Hartwig?
