I did have better equipment in my made to order Dell over the Gateway... but if you are comfortable formating a new hard drive and adding the operating system yourself, you should save some cash, keep your monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc and just get a barebones kit...

Do you get to choose the chassis on a site like barebones? I want a chassis that's easy to open, not one in which I have to unscrew a billion screws to get inside.

Yep thats what I did, got one thumb screw on the back... side panel slides right off. Also made sure the barebones box had USB access panel on the front and 2 in the back. Kinda wish I would have had firewire access on front, but I already had the Pinnacle card I had sunk cash into...

I'm gonna guess that you were trying to load NT 4.0 on a FAT32 partition. Gotta be FAT16 for NT 4.0. Win2000 will let you load on FAT32.

And NT was designed to handle terabytes of hard drive data, so your drive was a drop in the bucket for NT.

No, that's not it. I think it has to do with the number of cylinders on my HD. To boot with 98, I need to boot EZBIOS first, then the rest of the system. Basically, it's a BIOS/hardware issue with NT trying to boot from a drive that it doesn't recognize cuz the EZBIOS hasn't initialized or something... I gave up... it shouldn't be that hard.

Well, I did it... (Not that it was that tuff) - picked up a barebones box with:

Intel P4 1.6
64MB Video Card w TVout
512 DDR
60GB 7200 Hard drive
DVD
CD/RW
10/100
Sound Blaster Live
(Then pulled some of my other PCI cards etc out of the old box and put in this one)

Added XP and everything loaded right on up.

On top of that I changed my household network to this thing:

Its cool - got a lap top and this PC Cat5 to the back. Got 2 other PC's in the house going through wireless. The cool thing is this PC does not have to be on for the others to work. My other RR sharing deal by Intel relied on this PC to be on and be the host.

Even though my old PC was a P3 500mhz, it did have 32mb video and 384MB ram, I did not expect this new one to be much faster on the internet... This bitch screams;)

Nice SLOW computer Sandy... lol...

mine:

Intel P4 2.0 Ghz
128MB GeForce4 Titanium 4600 Vid Card w/ TV Out
1GB DDR
40GB 7200 Hard drive
DVD
CD/RW
10/100
Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum w/ built in Firewire and Live!Drive

And as far as networking I use the same thing that LinkSys setup can't be beat for the price.

Seriously decent computer man... I just like bragging on mine

Yea, but here's the thing. What do you want to be able to do, and how can a computer make that possible? Besides doing my job, on a computer I like to get on the internet, work on my daughter's web site (yes, my 6 month old has her own website and domain name) and edit video from my camcorder. Making QuickTime movies, e-mail them, or posting them at the web site. I would also like to edit them and put them to DVD. Editing Video on the computer is loads of fun. So the pleasure of putting them to DVD would be a nessesity. Besides that, for data storage, a DVD hold 4.7 gigs, and CD hold 650mb. So for back up and storage, what better? Dat Tapes? So getting back to an earlier question, with your CD software to burn DVD's, are you burning actual DVD's or Video CD's that play in a DVD? So, do I have a DVD-R? No. I don't even have a DVD. My computer is pretty old, but if there was something missing, it's a DVD-R. Soon, you won't be able to buy a computer without them being standard. They are already standard in most Macs, just not mine. Pioneer builds them for Apple, and their second version is out, and a little faster, so I may opt to buy the older one.
