Ok, it's still bugging me. I understand, you have the software for PC's already and all that. But besides that, what is it exactly that you don't like the way they work? I work extensively on both, PC's and Macs, and they both have problems, I know. But when it comes to ease of use, and dependabilty, nothing beats a Mac, especially on the rare occasion you do have a problem, they are much easier to resolve. As far as working on one, you would have to see the insides for yourself. Easy to upgrade, easy to get in and out. Just flip latch on the side, and you have access to everything.

Anyway, I'm just curious. Also, I was wondering what you paid, total. PM me if you like.

Its probably changed by now but years ago, I went to manage files on a mac and it was like a foriegn language trying to get into. I also don't like their proprietary stuff... I can handle Bill Gates dictating the operating system as long as I can pick and choose components - I don't have to worry if they are PC compatitble, just make sure they are not made for a Mac... as much as people bitch and moan about Windows/Gates... we probably would not be where we are today and we'd be forced to 2-3 times what you pay now for a Mac.

I've never had too many problems with PCs, this is my 8th or 9th since 1991.

I've bought homemade ones, gateways, dell, and made a few myself, guess I'm just comfortable with them.

Windows ME was really the only one that was pretty stupid. XP has been awesome... It got this puppy up and running with no problems.

I kind of cheated on this one, but all that stuff listed above was plugged in a case with power supply etc... I just had to plug in my external devices, load the OS and get everything running then transfer the Pinnacle card over.

As far as the price for all that stuff it was right around $800. The good thing was I was able to select every single component from the motherboard on up. So I checked on line for ratings etc of the different components and told them which ones to put in the box.

Interesting really. I guess there's two sides to everything. Macs are always breaking new ground for the PC's to follow. Actually, the first "PC" was the Personal Computer by Apple. But PC's have come a long way in the graphics world too.

The problem with PC's is a problem of success -- everybody makes stuff for them, so it's bound to not work perfectly. Macs have started to experience this as well. All the extensions and crap like that are a pain in the ass to figure out. My fiancee works on Macs all day long and they've got all sorts of issue of things being incompatible with particular graphics boards or particular OS's.

However, I do like the Mac system WAY more than Windows. Windows blows. The registry? Gimme a break. Why can't I just move stuff like the Mac allows me to? If I feel like being organized a particular way, I just move things around. On the PC you'd better just accept the way they want things to go and not ask questions.

Can we get a more obnoxious folder name than "My Documents"? Please, can we?

I tried loading NT onto my old system but it just won't do it. I think it has to do with my Hard Drive not being NT compatible (that is, it's too big for NT to recognize or something).

Oh well, computers are computers... they'll always f up on you....

Hmmm.... tried XP? Registry settings were a snap when I transferred Outlook stuff.

I'm organized exactly like I wanna be. Name my folders whatever I want and organize however I want. You can go into Excel and Word and even set the default save to folder - one you created...

Hmmm seems like a different experiences here...

You are correct sir... I remember whacking off at night trying to figure out a way to buy that freaking apple PC... it was indeed a gem.

On another note, I had a good friend that was a Mac Lover for over 8 years.... he switched to PC/Windows and says it is much easier for the average user to do things "behind the scenes".

Yea, SuperNut, what's up? What OS is your wife on? What third party stuff is she having problems with?

I think for WinNT, you have to partition it so 1 gig or 2 for your operating software, and the rest you do what you want, shared drive or whatever. Keep in mind, NT is not really for working on, it just sits there and Administors the network.

I'm on windows 2000 right now. My first experience was with 98. Got my computer home, tried to reorganize where things were. Applications->Graphics->photohop. Stuff like that. Pretty soon, NOTHING worked. Had to re-install everything. Normally I like to put my Apps on a whole different drive so I can have a pristine OS partition for Backup/Restore purposes, but SO much of the OS is interlinked with software installs that I gave up on that idea.


My fiancee works on OS 9. She just upgraded to 9.2 (to use Final Cut 3) and has had nothing but trouble. They'd go to OS X but it's not compatible with some of the graphics cards they have.

NT won't even load onto my computer. I set the partitioning and everything, go through all the steps, then it wants to reboot at some stage and then just complains that it can't do it. No good reason... just can't. Tried about 20 times. Finally gave up. Moot point now that 2000 is out, but I dunno if I can even install it on my old system.
