I like the Dead but I've never owned any of their stuff - borrowed vinyl for short periods only. It's now time to include them in my CD collection, so where should I start? Recommendations please - say the top 5 CDs to buy - live or studio, any era.

    I suggest some JGB, too.

    Top shows for the newbie:

    5-8-77 Cornell.
    2-13-70 Fillmore East
    3-29-90 Nassau
    9-10-91 MSG
    3-1-69 Fillmore West

Hundreds more. All of these can be downloaded via .flac, .shn, or streamed for free off of archive.org

JGB is a bit tougher - But for Live JGB I reccomend:

Jerry Garcia Band - Double CD from 1990.
How Sweet it Is - More 1990 JGB, a great year.

Or - goto bt.etree.org and look for quality.

I own ZERO studio work from either of jerry's bands. It all pretty much sucks.

If you are looking for something to buy at a store or online, get some random Dick's Pick's. Thats if your not interested in something you would have to download.
