I'm looking forward to the movie. The book was interesting and Brown certainly took a very sensationalist track with most of the research done regarding the Priory of Sion, Rennes-le-Chateau, Rosslyn Chapel and the Templar connection.

I read Holy Blood, Holy Grail when it was first released and it's been a great jumping off point for a lot of my recreational "research" since. Origins of the New Testament canon, the Knights Templar, Freemasonary, etc, are all pulled together in one epoch spanning conspiracy. Each in its own right is good shit to study.

My hope is that since so few Christians know the history of their own Church, maybe the movie will encourage a few to actually learn something that isn't spoonfed to them from a pulpit on Sunday.

The movie is good. If you haven't read the book, you will still enjoy, but you will be slightly bombarded with information in a short time that is better explained in the book. Obviously, they had to skip some parts of the book for length, but it stays mostly true to the book with a few exceptions. I was happy with how faithful (pun intended) they were to the book. I think my favorite part of the novel is the tie-ins with history and artifacts and the traipsing about Europe in search of clues and such. It's almost like a tour of European cathedrals and art, which I sure he had to extensive research on for this novel. I still maintain, however, that the book should be read. I don't say this to upset devout Christians that this is a true story, jb and hasbeens, but it is a work of fiction that has some historical basis and presented in a plausible way. I think it is intelligent enough to get some people looking to the Bible for some answers, and that is a good thing, no matter what their intentions or findings.

For the most part, I agree with you. I read the book, and from a strictly fictional point of view, it was a very good mystery. And like you, Hoops, I hope this does prompt people to do some digging into Biblical history and into the Bible itself.

If I can be so bold as to speak for JB, I think his concern (and mine, too) is the potential for this fictional tale based on non-fictional history to tempt people sitting on the fence to embrace the conspiracy theory rather than the truth, even though the book and the film are straightforward about the story being fiction.

Not really. I see both The DaVinci Code and the bible as a work of fiction.

Of course, the bible has a lot more sex, violence, murder, adultery, sexism, human sacrifice, incest, etc, so I won't let my young kids read it.
