I just thought of something; With the Hornets in Nola now, the sportslandscape here could be pretty bare for many years to come because . . .
1) Forget about the NHL coming to town; the league will not put 2 teams in North Carolina!!!!!!!! Funny now with the Canes going deep into the playoffs, the Triangle is experiencing what Charlotte went thru back in 1993, when the Hornets made their first trip to the postseason (When the beat the Celtics in 4 and then lost to the Knicks in 5). I always wonder why none of the civic leaders/corporate bigwigs made a play for the Whalers back in the Spring of 1997
; Having 2 teams here would've made financing Hive #2 a bit easier to pull off . . . . .
2) MLB won't be coming to CLT, U-N-L-E-S-S Bud Selig & Co. can't pull off their contraction plan. It looks like the Twins M-A-Y get a new ballpark after all, so they are safe. Only the Expos & Marlins are having awful draws at the gate now; either or both of these teams might be on the move soon!!!!
Someone in the Commish office said a few months ago only Washington, DC appeared ready to be able to handle MLB (based on the usual barometers; per capita income, TV market, population, etc.). With the Hornets out of town now, do we have a better shot at supporting MLB now
? ? ? If Jeff Loria, new owner of the Marlins, wakes up anytime now and realizes 'Man, there is no way I can get a stadium built down here', will he run back to Bud Selig and ask for the green light to move the team here perhaps? I guess we would be the smallest 2 team market in MLB (1.5 million metro population). But if we were to go after MLB, then the city would have to have its act together from step 1; ownership group in place, stadium site & financing plan in writing, etc. . . . . I won't discount MLB coming here sooner now, but after seeing how the bigwigs/politicos messed up keeping the Hornets here, I'm not sure if they can bring MLB to town now
. . . .
3) NBA: Only if we go through what St. Louis & Houston did when they lost their previous NFL franchises (Cards & Oilers respectively). Yeah, there were tons of folks who were happy to see Bud Bidwell & Bud Adams go, but then a few years down the road they were crying for a team again. The league would be better off having an even 30 teams in the league, but again this city would have to have its act together from Step 1 to get them back in town.
As many folks here who are saying 'Screw the NBA, we still have ACC hoops to root for here!!!!' the thing is none of the ACC schools play in CLT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure a few more folks will check out the Knights, Checkers, but they will always be minor league (i.e., your not going to have 20000 folks each night at either games, unless they're selling tixs for a $1 each!!!). Yeeeeeeessssssssss, we still have the Panthers & the races at LOWE'S MOTOR SPEEDWAY, but there are only 3 of them there each year. It seems to me that unless NBA or MLB comes to town soon, we might've just taken a big step back as a major sports town profile wise
!!!!!!!!!!!
