By "the league" you mean one of the most ridiculous franchises in professional sports?

They had a Chaplin running their organization at one point.

I recognize him as a guy who's never officially coached. Because that's who he is.

I don't mind Reich breaking him in, but QB coach isn't supposed to be an entry level position.

I'll clarify here Reich is probably going to be supervising the qb coaching carefully (a la Reid/gruden) so McCown is likely on board as an ideas guy. Not buying the hype but crony hires are pretty much the norm.

The success of future panthers qbs is likely down to who and how much Reich can "fix" them while being the head man- Reid does it well, as does Peterson- gruden not so much.

Reich wasn't promoted to QB coach until his fourth year of coaching. He filled various entry level coaching jobs from '06 to '08. This is typically how teams handle former players who have the coaching itch. You start them from the very bottom to see if they really want to be in this profession. The legitimate ones, like Frank Reich, ascend the hierarchy. Most of them quit or get fired.

And I don't count moonlighting at your local high school. That stuff is not even in the same universe as NFL position coach. Any one of us could do that.

McCown knows the offense, so that's a plus. He might have the "make up" of a good coach. I just wonder if he really understands what he's getting himself into. It's a big jump from mentor/player coach to actual assistant. The veteran mentor QB can go home to his family after the games. He has Tuesday off. He doesn't have to sift through 65 snaps of Baker Mayfield being shitty against Baltimore at 11pm.
