Anybody else feel that possibly the addition of Olsen and Shockey will also help the defense defend opposing TEs. Everybody knows that the TE position has always been a weak point to defend for the Panthers.

Yeah, the TE will be a big part of the offense. I think Olsen is getting overrated in fantasy circles, but he should have a pretty good season.

Yeah the TEs will definitely help out, but I was meaning more of our defense going against them in practice maybe making our defense better at defending the TEs. I don't know how much it really will help with the practices being cut down as well. Who knows. Our defense has been decent even last year. They were on the field so much that by the 2nd half, they were so worn out that it caused their stats to look bad. Anything will probably be better than what we watched last year.

I doubt that has any real effect, but McDermott using a different scheme probably will.

Some of Gantt's followers and have been in a healthy debate tonight over the significance of a #2 WR in this offense. My stance on it is that, even if it's an emerging LaFell or Naanee, either of our young QB's would benefit greatly from a veteran presence opposite 89. Gantt's take on it was, in essence, go look at SD's STATS for #2 WR for the past few years, and get back to me.

    Smug? Fine. That's his bag.

Just a thought, and maybe I'm the fuckwad here: the divide between Rivers and what Carolina has at QB is fairly wide, at least in 2011. Rivers doesn't have a stronger #2 because he is a better, more accurate passer than JC/Cam. Additionally, he runs that offense like a machine, when at his best, and he's able to feed the TE in more ways that one.

As documented, I have already marked Olsen as lined up in 4 different spot on or behind the line, pre-snap. He is a nice chess piece, as proven on Saturday.

To me, this team is not worse with a proven, veteran WR to line up opposide 89, with 88/80 mastering the notorious "Dallas Clark" alignment.

I realize the crop is thin, but I don't appreciate the "just look up the stats" argument. Show me video and photos of SD's formations, shifts, packages, audibles, positional alignments from 2010, 2009, etc. --then, we can discuss like informed football pundits.

Until then, stats are simply a product of what's listed above.

Or, maybe Brian Billick has the answers.

    Arguing with Gantt is futile.

Unless your goal is to make him cry and go back to mommy, which he does frequently.

Not sure what his point was, to be honest. The Chargers' #2s have generally put up pretty strong numbers, especially given the limited targets thanks to having the best TE in the game. But it's undeniable that they've been heavily involved in the passing game. It's not as critical as a place like Indy, for instance, but much more important in SD than it has been in Carolina the last few seasons where it was basically Steve Smith or bust.
