Doesn't look like it. Did anyone know that the Commish was here this weekend.

This is just a blurb @ the end of this story.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tagliabue was making his first appearance at a Panthers game since 2000.

Also, Tagliabue said the Carolinas are at least 10 years away from hosting a Super Bowl from the time an official bid is made.

The Panthers have a 73,366-seat outdoor stadium. But the weather in Charlotte in January is never consistent and Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has admitted the city currently lacks the hotel and tourism structure to host a Super Bowl.

Tagliabue did not touch on either of those issues, just pointing out there is a long list of cities eager to a Super Bowl.

"It's a tough competition," Tagliabue said. "I've told many owners competing for the Super Bowl is as tough as competing for your divisional title. This area would be competitive with a lot of other areas. But ... there would be some tough competition."

i didn't have time to read the article, just the excerpt you posted.

what i'd like to know, is what is richardson smoking? where does he think these people that come into town for NASCAR stay? the hotel reason is total bullshit.

You have to have a bunch more hotel space than for a NASCAR race because people set up so many demos, booths, bring clients, etc. who aren't planig to go to the game. Also, there are quite a few people who go to the NASCAR races that live in the Charlotte area. And don't forget those that stay at the track in mobile homes.

Although I am quite positive J.R. could finance the finest ganja this side of the Bue Mountains of Jamaica, he is not making that statement whilst under the influence.

NASCAR has a lot of fans who are self housed. There are more RV sites around the speedway than dropped passes by Moose. Plus the average NASCAR fan is a working stiff who will gladly stay in the Red Roof Inn and eat at Waffle House. Superbowl fans are largely corporate types who demand 24 hour full menu room service and 800 thread-count sheets to sleep on. My company did a study into using Charlotte as a convention site for 35,000 employees and we found that Charlotte did not have the facilities downtown to accomodate. 70,000+ fans plus all the media support teams and league stuff. There is not the space, even with the Red Roof Inn included!

10 years is proably right. I doubt there are more than 5000 qualified rooms within 5 miles of downtown. When we start getting 30,000+ attendee conventions on a regular basis, than Superbowl host site talks can commence...

the NFL actually has guidelines on the number of 'premium' hotel rooms that must be available to host a Super Bowl. also, there have been studies that show that in addition to the 70,000+ people that come to town to see the game, twice that many come to town just to experience the party.

we are not ready for this show...and even if we were, i doubt we would get a SB unless they put a roof over Ericsson.

you guys make good points. yes, there are many NASCAR fans who do stay in RV's and many who live within driving distance. however, there are 170,000 or so seats there and you can't tell me at least half, at least, i'm sure its way more than that, of those seats are filled with people staying in a hotel somewhere in town. there are plenty of hotel rooms available in that sense.

i didn't realize the super bowl was so uppity that they had rules regarding "premium" hotels and the like. in that case, you all hit the nail on the head.

yeah, jacksonville actually got over on that rule by agreeing to bring cruise ships into the St John river for the week. They will be docked, but you can get a room on the boat during the festivities. the NFL bit at the idea and now the SB will be in J'ville next year. that, my friends, is marketing genious.

I am guessing that a busload full of Eastern European and Brazilian call girls could get those rules waived.....

Saw a line once from someone that summed it up nicely for cities wanting the Super Bowl

"No local January golf? No Super Bowl."
