I know this because the Lions want someone to sign McMahon who is also a RFA.

The draft pick depends on the amount of the contract. If someone signs McMahon to a deal that averages over 1 mil per year, the lions get a first round pick. I'm not sure what the dollar levels are, but as the dollars go down, so does the draft pick....McMahon was a 5th round pick.

    Hmm...

Honestly I think a replacement for Moose would be easier to find than a replacement for Smith. Smith is the more explosive player IMO. I like Moose, but if you're gonna keep one better be Smith. The only reason Moose is in question is that contract. At that salary you could have Owens or many, many other top WRs opposite Smith.

I like Moose, but he is overpaid when he is not even the best WR on his own team.

See above. There is no dollar level compensation, just
    *where you were drafted
    *first round
    *first and third

If you keep one, keep Smith, certainly. Because he's younger and has more speed. But not for any other reasons, Moose brings just as much, and adds a lot more in leadership, hustle, run game.

You're not getting Terrell Owens for that contract. Just because the guy has a high salary in the last year doesn't mean that everyone in the world is looking to sign for $4 mil a year.

And no one player is worth three other prominent players. Sorry.

I don't want to sound like I'm disagreeing with anyone here. If we keep everyone - I'm not destroyed by it.

That said, I don't see the same value in Stuessie and Donnelly as others here. I like Moose a lot, especially since his late season and playoffs were incredible. I just don't risk Smith to keep Moose and paying 2 WRs that much doe would make me a little uneasy.

If we kept all our players and maybe sign a Vincent in FA (low contract) I would'nt be terribily upset.

In a perfect world though, I want some good younger players along that OL.
Even if Stuessie stays - I DO NOT see Willig as a good backup LT! We must get another T this offseason.

    the rules as written:

Restricted free agents are players with qualifying offers who have completed three accrued seasons of service and whose contracts have expired. By extending a qualifying offer, a team retains right of first refusal on the player. If that player accepts an offer from another club, the original team can either match it and retain the player or receive draft-choice compensation equal to the level of the qualifying offer. If the player is not given a qualifying offer, he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Exclusive rights free agents are players with qualifying offers who have completed less than three accrued seasons of service and whose contracts have expired. By extending a qualifying offer, the original team becomes the only one that can negotiate with that player during free agency. If the player is not given a qualifying offer, he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

    ---

therefore the level of the qualifying offer decides the draft pick.

Steussie and Donnalley are different cases. In Todd's case, I see a player who has a lot left to give and probably can't be upgraded upon financially, the risk case being that he ages out. The typical Fox answer is that they can't find a better tackle for the money they'd have by cutting him, and he can still help us out. I can't disagree with that.

Donnalley, somewhat likewise, though the risk is somewhat less likely based on his position.

    >>I just don't risk Smith to keep Moose and paying 2 WRs that much doe would make me a little uneasy.

I really just don't understand. There should be no reason to sacrifice one for the other.

For one, you're not going to get a receiver "almost" as good as Muhammad for half his money. You don't get starting receivers at $2 mil. Two, if it comes down to needing that much money for Smith, then we can't pay him anyway. Now we're talking $6 million range and I'm just not comfortable with that. I'd rather have the picks and the ability to sign requisite players than be robbed outright. It comes down to being able to get the deal with Smith done, not slash and burn economics to keep him no matter what.

The end result is that we can replace Smith easier than Jake. That's the issue, the rest will fiscally sit on its own merit.

I don't see a problem with Willig. I remember mention of "being blown up" at goal line TE, but he was the best of the second line in preseason despite there being some money and high draft picks there.

Yes. But you seem to be saying that you can take a 5th round player, offer him $750k instead of $600k, and suddenly he's worth a 3rd.

No. There's the initial value of drafting: for Smith, that's a 3rd, for Cooper that's a 5th. For a guy like Howard, that means no compensation, just RFR. There isn't middle ground between drafted value and first round compensation.

not $$ amount, but percentage increase...which leads to a dollar amount.

    http://www.askthecommish.com/freeagency/

the $$ amount therefore will lead to the picks...either the original round, a 1st round, or a 1st and 3rd round.

That's what I've been saying. You seemed to suggest that there was compensation between drafted compensation and first. Certainly, enough people make that mistake.
