    The only "fine" that comes from releasing a player before his contract is up is that the signing bonus that is pro-rated across the years of the contract take effect immediately (or split in half across two years).

    If you sign a guy for $20M for 5 years, half of that being signing bonus, and then cut him before year 3, the remaining 6M of bonus hits in year 3. (or 3 and 3 in years 3 and 4)
