Little programs that run on your computer and connect to a server somewhere on the internet to relay information to them about your computer or what you're doing... I think the name is also applied to programs that are "secretly" installed when you install a package that you actually want.

Reb turned us on (take that for what it's worth) to 'Ad-Aware' software that scans your PC for spyware. I like it OK, but maybe Reb and some others will jump in.
