COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina reported eight secondary NCAA violations from May through December. Three of the violations involved the football team.
Each violation was ruled secondary by the NCAA, which accepted the corrective action taken by the university’s athletic department, which involved letters of reprimand in most cases, athletics spokesman Kerry Tharp said.
The Greenville News acquired the information through a Freedom of Information Act request. The coaches and athletes involved were not named.
The three football violations reported were:
– Two players attending summer school at a junior college received tutoring from South Carolina while not enrolled at the university. Both have reimbursed the school, Tharp said.
– A player received more than the Southeastern Conference allotment of four tickets for a home game.
– A walk-on player signed his complimentary guest card allowing family members to attend a game but then had guests admitted who were not family members.
The track and field team also reported three violations including a coach paying for athletes’ meals, an athlete competing without being listed on the official squad list and an athlete who competed before being certified as eligible.
One violation involved athletes from several sports. Four players had their names and pictures “associated improperly with commercial entities,” the school said.
That involved a weekly athlete-of-the-week feature in the publication Spurs & Feathers, Tharp said.
The final reported violation involved men’s basketball player Marius Petravicius, who, was declared ineligible for playing for a team that was a member of a European pro league. He was suspended for three games before he regained his eligibility.
