The Panthers might be healthier than expected at the start of training camp.

A league source indicated Monday night there is a strong chance defensive end Mike Rucker will be cleared to practice when players have their physical exams in Spartanburg on Friday. If Rucker isn’t cleared for the opening of camp, he isn’t expected to sit out very long.

That’s a bit of a surprise because Rucker and coach John Fox indicated in June that the veteran defensive end might have to miss significant time early in camp. Rucker suffered a major knee injury late last season, and recovery times for similar injuries have taken up to a full year.

Offensive tackle Travelle Wharton, coming off a knee injury suffered in last year’s season opener, also is likely to be cleared for the start of camp, as long as there are no complications discovered in his physical

It's very good news. It gives us more time to get CJ ready, and I'd rather have Rucker starting against the Rams in our base defense. We would probably still spell him with Johnson and/or McClover, but his progress is encouraging.

and if they follow their normal approach, he'll get lots of rest during training camp. all the better.

I think the problem is an ACL that was torn 7 months ago.

he oughta start earning some soon. He did look fine as a backup against NO's taxi squad, and he's got potential. But with a more esteemed end in front of him, he'll work to see the field. The upside is he looks competent enough right now and mature enough physically to be in a uniform all year.

Good enough news on Rucker, but not totally unexpected as of the last time we heard from him he was ahead of schedule. Hopefully there's enough time to get him in football shape but still keep him fresh.

I like McClover and his potential. I honestly wouldn't have been against the Panthers cutting Rucker lose, but I think him taking the pay cut and playing was cheaper than cutting him outright. May see him lose a little playing time this fall to the younger guys. Well unless he just comes in playing like a monster, but that isn't expected.
