or is he just another onetime-great washed-up DB? Sorta like Jason Sehorn redux?

not really... I mean if he could be had at a reasonably cheap price I'd consider it, but I wouldn't rank him as a top guy on my list either.

Yeah but are you willing to Swap Minter for him? That's essentially what you're doing. Even if you move Minter to FS he isn't nearly effective. And Lynch doesn't have the coverage skills Minter has.

I know Mike Minter's natural position is SS, but how well could he play FS? Is his coverage skills that bad? Would Mike be better than Deon Grant at coverage? If so, our starting safties would be John Lynch and Mike Minter. That's nasty right there. We could live with a Rookie CB this year. Our secondary would be the Shizzle.

at man coverage, no, I don't find Minter better than Grant. Range, and reaction, as well as overall speed and ball skills are more than adequate for FS. Can be a little agressive at times, which along with hitting and physical play make him a better SS>

    Could he make it? Sure.
But we'd really want someone as rangy at FS.

So, John Lynch wouldn't add that much then. So, a FS is usually a CB that isn't quite fast enough to be a CB, so he is a FS. Not a big hitter, but someone to help make plays on the ball, I guess.

very generally, yes. Of course it differs a lot in scheme. If you had four cover men, to be very basic, you'd put your fastest at corner, your next most athletic at FS, your most physical at SS.
But obviously it goes a lot deeper than that - corners need instincts in short areas, free safeties have to read the field, make decisions on the second man to his side, flow to the ball, read/react, and so on.
We could use Lynch at SS, but at this point in his career he's more suited to playing up on the ball, like Leroy Butler was able to do successfully, and then cover in the shorter zones. We don't often play a safety up unless it's specifically for certain situations, like blitzing.
