Starting to think Rivera has his mind made up the minute he walked in the building. I would imagine he and Hurney had discussions about Smith, which led to discussions with JR.

I have no doubt that 89 is still explosive, and can be a 1400-yd receiver again. But no organization wants a malcontent dragging down the morale.

Newton is a known cheater, and has been arrested. But I don't view his personality weakness as "malcontent". I think he has a ton to learn, but I think he's a much more positive leader than Smith.

Shockey is key in this offense. If he can stay healthy, and not pull a Freddie Jones on us, he'll help Newton/Clausen/Moore/whomever is behind center in 2011.

I don't know how well Smith will mesh with Rivera. Foxy gave him a ton of freedom, and even when he inexplicably sucker punched one of our starting corners--knocking him out for week one--Fox only suspended him for two games.

Smith, I would argue, is as much of a fraud as Newton.

Newton's demeanor reminds me a bit of Smitty. He seems to have a fire about him, a way of reacting to criticism by bringin his game up several notches and fucking his enemy so deep it breaks them forever.

Imagine having smitty's fire in a 6'5" 250# 22 year old QB with 4.59 speed and a live arm?

Worth the risk.

 

Newton, to my knowledge, never sucker punched two teammates. And, if someone can find me a clip where Newton has ever challenged his coach on the sidelines, post it.

Hey, as long as Cam is ready to roll by 2012, pick him. I think he would be, for any team with a competent staff. I look at our staff, and I say "goddamn, where the fuck have y'all been all my life?"

 

Jamarcus Russell is a big QB with a big arm who played in the SEC and wore #2 on his chest then got drafted number one overall.....

Peppers always has a few games where he dominates but then he is invisible for long stretches. He did it for a whole season a couple of years ago when he put up 2 sacks all year.
