How come people seem to have such a reluctance to have a starting WR return punts, when it is fairly commonplace to have a starting CB do it?

I think a star WR is harder to replace than a CB.....We lose Gamble and that is bad, but I think others are present to step up. We lose Smitty, see 2004 results...

Add Foster, Davis, either Gross or Wharton, Jenkins.... Smart or Robertson. Then we might see that again.

If we lost Smitty we'd be worse @ #1 WR than last year but probably are a little better @ 2 w/Gardener > than Colbert as a rook.

I'm sure none of us wants to find out what it would really be like.

I would just as soon not have star player returning punts anyway. Most star players are pulled off punt return duty when they blossom, see Tim Brown or Darrell Green.

None of that still answers the question. Just because other teams pull their stars from doesn't mean another has to.

There is no reason we have to do that but it makes a lot of sense IMHO. Look at Jason Seahorn. He was never the same after he tore up his knee on a kickoff return. Smith is too valuable to use on punt returns.

I don't like it either, but how many injuries to Smitty has he had as a PR v/s a WR?

Yeah, I know it's extra exposur and all that, but I have moved on....I think we all need to...it is what it is.

Who all uses a starting CB to return punts right now, regularly?

You don't pay a guy $5 mil a year and then let him get further in harm's way. We could've had a good combination return man, but haven't for the last few years because Smith wants to return punts. When he got hurt, we lost a starting receiver AND a punt returner. But hey, each his own. Me, I'd rather not see him get hurt.

i think he feels he has more control when returning punts, as opposed to returning kickoffs, because he can always fair catch a punt, thus choosing to call a play dead if the coverage doesnt llok advantageous.

But, yeah, he is still more in harms way than not returning punts.
