I would just as soon not have him return this year at this point. We just gave him a huge contract and we need him to be back at full strength eventually. Two words keep flashing in my head PATRICK JEFERS.

this don't sound good. my brother had almost an identical break a year and a half ago playing baseball, when someone steamrolled him at 2nd on a bad throw. foot planted and he fell back over his leg, almost the same angle as it appears smith did. broken, ligament/tendon damage, all kinds of shit.

he was put on drugs, softcasted and even went home from the hospital and slept in his own bed that night. the doc met him the next morning at a different hospital closer to home. had surgery that morning. they set everything, put screws in, did whatever you do to repair ligaments and shit, and sent him home.

i don't know much about broken bones and surgery, other than what i've seen personally. i had surgery on a broken forearm 6 or 7 years back and had plates put in. then the above surgery my brother had where they put screws in. but, i'm thinking, you don't have surgery to set a bone. if it goes that far, you're putting screws and/or plates in.

which leads me to this sad news. if there were screws put in, as with my brother, there can't be any pressure on that until those screws come out. remember i said my brother broke his on may 31st and had surgery the morning of june 1st. his screws were taken out on august 4th. just over 2 months later. rehab couldn't start until after that.

he was shooting for fall ball to come back. he could hardly jog when september rolled around. it wasn't until late october or so before he could run. into november and december until he was back near full strength.

now, i know that an average joe and a pro athlete aren't gonna recieve the same treatment, even tho the doc that did my brothers surgery was with the group that handles the panthers. so that should speed things up a little, what with all the specialists that smitty will be seeing and such.

still, this fucking sucks. thought i would shed a little light. lets hope its not as bad as this scenario, but thats what it looks like to me. if you do the math, with a similar timetable as above, then we'll see him in 05':(

Colbert should've been active this game. Odd that he wasn't.

Yeah, I'd expect that Colbert starts. I think we get too wrapped up in our situations if we're not activating Colbert.

Baker in, too. I wouldn't be surprised if we have to sit Goings this week.

How many games did they have more than WRs active last year, without a bunch of injuries at other positions. Bet it was very few. I wasn't surprised at all that he wasn't active.

We kept 6. Baker never dressed. Young alternated between street and uniform. But there was as often a matter of quality and gameplan.
My point is that this week's starter was inactive last week, and Proehl's not going to change in role, so certainly the team is very stuck in its convention as far as personnel goes.

On the other hand, if that's the case, feeding Colbert with a lot of intermediate balls isn't a terrible idea.

I'd say 8 weeks minimum. I broke both bones in my lower leg right above the ankle & tore my achilles and was on crutches with & then without cast for 3 months roughly. No surgery though. I was in 6th grade and not playing pro sports though. The cast was up to my hip - mainly due to achilles damage & concern for it tearing more/snapping and they didn't want any rotation at all. Had full cast for 8 weeks, below the knee for 2, walking cast & crutches for a week and then one week of complete crutches & not using leg when cast removed. I'd say I was fairly "able" when I was through with everything but I also wasn't doing competitive tackling type sports. But my leg was a STICK compared to the other one. But with advances in rehab etc hopefully Smitty can do some limited leg work before the end so he won't lose a lot of muscle/strength. My fear is the way Smitty plays, he really needs to be 100% before he sees contact or all out play.

i've got all kinds of screws and plates in my heels and i walk fine. they just leave the hardware in unless it starts coming out on its own, then they have to go get it. usually it stays in place.

Unless they put him on IR, which I don't think they will, this won't open a roster spot.

To Malapoo, an Achilles injury is very serious. Those things just don't heal right if they completely tear, so yours was probably much more serious. They may never tell us the full extent of Smith's injury, but they haven't mentioned anything but the bone so far.
