    well, it isn't any better for that guy anyway. but maybe some guys are better at sliding.

    from their experiment, it seems like the real crux is foot placement as you approach the bag. if you can reach first with a slide while still mostly airborne, then you might be better off -- especially cuz in order to do so, you'd probably be in between steps for a good run-thru. either having to jump with an outstretched foot (and thus missing the same final push off as with sliding) or you'd have to add an additional step which you couldn't really push off from or you'd miss the bag entirely.

    some theories are when you leave your feet it takes the first base umpire off his guard and isn't "his normal routine" and if you can create a little diversion with the dust cloud from sliding, it can also make it more difficult for the umpire to make the right call.

    the only time its ok to slide in at first is when the throw from another infielder draws the first baseman off the bag and he has to tag the base runner. if you're running straight up, it is easier for him to apply the tag. sliding under the tag would be appropriate in that case. think of pick off moves from the pitcher. you would'nt go back standing up would you?
