Most coordinators end up looking good with a good offensive line. I don't think it's a coincidence that the winning streak started once we figured out the right combination late in 2014.

 

For another example of what I'm talking about, notice this constant barrage of comments from NFL analysts about how Cam has "matured and developed as a pocket passer." Cam Newton threw for 422 yards in his first game and 432 yards in his second game. His best two seasons for passing yardage and passing yards per attempt were his first two. This is such a lazy, easily disproven narrative and yet one "expert" after another on ESPN keeps saying it.

 

Do you not see a difference pre snap? It's been 5 years so memory is not fresh but it seems like he is much more in control and at ease this year, to me.

 

I do love the way he uses the snap count. That drives defensive linemen crazy. That said, his improvements are subtle, not significant.

 

I do not.

 

It's funny that Bill Barnwell of all people is the one ESPN guy who has said publicly that this narrative is overblown and that Cam isn't much different from what he was years ago, that people are seeing him differently because the team is winning so often.

 

We are running a non-huddle offense more often than in previous years with him.

I think he's subtly gotten better at presnap reads and then going through his progressions.

I think his cadence has gotten better prolly because the team is used to it more so.

He doesn't overthrow receivers as bad. His footwork and mechanics are still not great, not much change there.

I think he's subtly gotten better in all those areas, but not significantly. My eyeball opinion, as well as listening to his fellow players say the same thing.

In aggregate the chains get moved more and scoring has improved. Less turnovers by the O and more by the D. The offense has been better at jumping out to leads at the beginning of the games. The whole team just seems to be playing together better.

None of this has anything much to do with Shula.

 

That's true and it does affect performance because the defense can't substitute and will play more vanilla against no-huddle. He still overthrows receivers as much as ever and I haven't seen anything to suggest that he's better at presnap reads.
