more honest than saying we can get players we probably couldn't? 20% was a critical errorto keep a top FA, to you, but unmatchable in your thoughts above by teams that signed with these players.

I mean, bonus points for getting bunched up about the word l used, but were you arguing that 20% gets these players outright but is too much for our own?

I'm pretty confident that if you take any free agent who signed with anyone and offer them 20% extra on top of what they signed for, they'll change teams right now.

The Panthers didn't pay 20% more for Johnson than anyone else's offer. It was more like 100% more than the next best offer. Moreover, you shouldn't have to pay extra to keep one of your own.

Testing this you are saying Player A offered $5M a year to play for the Patriots/Green Bay would jump to play for Bills/Bengals/Redskins for $6M a year?

I don't think so. What is the per playoff game check? What is a real shot at a ring worth?

You're right, I should have said "most" instead of "any." That would be much less true for veterans on the wrong side of 30 who have a limited window to win. But yes, getting $6 mil per season over $5 mil is a pretty significant difference.

edit: and playoff checks are ~20k.

I had been thinking 20-25% was a fair premium but there ARE other factors that players have to consider... (no real data implied with the below but as an example tells the more complicated story)

    Team A Base: $5m
    • Merchandise potential: X2-3
    • Endorsements potential: X2 (or much more)
    • State income tax: Avg or None
    • Quality of life: Warm climate, low housing prices, dome...
    Team B Base: $6m
    • Merchandise potential: X1
    • Endorsements potential: X1/2 (or much less)
    • State income tax: High
    • Quality of life: Cold climate, high housing prices, no dome...

I wonder if you can apply a valid baseline percentage or are most negotiations gut calls?

Edit Note: In researching this point I discovered that players love game days that take them to Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and Washington as their pay for that game gets no state income tax applied.

you don't know the offer in reality. But reading correctly would tell you that I didn't mention the offers, but the contract he signed vs what you expected.

Ive shown that players on your own list are quoted as saying they'dtogether go where they want than take more money. The idea that Cullen Jenkins lied, I don't know about that. Also a reach that none of these teams could possibly match, or how many more players would've turned us down than have already. the best FA WR we landed was Naanee, reportedly turned down by Edwards for more money too. Moss for equal, more likely to have been matched too.
