His 5-13 playoff record has taken on a life of its own. The loss to the Patriots was his sixth straight in the postseason dating to 1993, and the ninth time a Schottenheimer-coached team lost its opening playoff game. His teams have failed four times to capitalize on the home-field advantage that comes with owning the AFC's No. 1 seed.

Why now? Several Chargers sources told FOXSports.com that this past weekend Smith and owner Dean Spanos were among a group that flew to Hawaii together to celebrate with their star players the inclusion of so many Chargers in this year's Pro Bowl game. During the GM's time away with his boss he was able to take aim. Schottenheimer went his own way for a little rest and relaxation.

awful, awful timing. And while it can't be helped that Cameron and Phillips already left, certainly he was still their best hope. Now there really isn't much to be done there for a pro coach, unless they tab an ill-fitting Rivera or throw tons of money at Norv Turner.

Turner probably won't want to deal with crappy ownership/management after having gone from dealing with Al Davis to turning down Jerry Jones. Pete Carroll wants total control and San Diego's not that place.

There's not much on that Chargers staff left that's worth a damn. Maybe it's for the best, but I'd still have put more stock into Schottenheimer finding some top notch talent than anyone else available right now.

I'm sure Rivera will be mentioned. Moving on without Edwards, they could go to a 4-3 or some type of hybrid defense.

    SCHOTT FIRED

The San Diego Chargers, their coaching staff decimated by the loss of offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, and linebackers coach Greg Manusky, have fired head coach Marty Schottenheimer.

The move comes nearly four weeks after it was announced that Schottenheimer would be back for 2007.

And now that a new crop of recruits have signed on to attend USC, we wouldn't be surprised to see the Chargers court, and land, Trojans coach Pete Carroll.

In a statement issued by the team on Monday night, president Dean Spanos attributed the move to a "dysfunctional situation," and that an "intense search" for a successor will begin.

"Our fans deserve to know what changed for me over the last month," Spanos said. "When I decided to move ahead with Marty Schottenheimer in mid-January, I did so with the expectation that the core of his fine coaching staff would remain intact. Unfortunately, that did not prove to be the case, and the process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager. In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyond any doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation and create an environment where everyone at Charger Park would be pulling in the same direction and working at a championship level. I expect exactly that from our entire Charger organization in 2007."

Although G.M. A.J. Smith has not yet been fired, keep in mind that the bulk of a front office's work is done in the days leading up to free agency and the draft. Come early May, we've got a feeling that Smith will be sent packing, too.

Back to Carroll, we're not swayed by the fact that Spanos promises an "intense search." If he says now that Carroll is the guy, the Chargers will never be able to comply with the Rooney Rule, which requires that at least one minority candidate be interviewed for the job.

Regardless of where the team goes next, the move marks a stunning end to an otherwise stellar season.

The assistant thing is one of the lamest excuses I've heard. I guess Bellichick is the next to go. He can't seem to keep his assistants from getting opportunities either.

Granted, Marty has a history of folding in the playoffs, but so did Tony Dungy till this season. Add in that the Chargers flat out sucked before Marty got there and now they're contenders. Yeesh.

Sounds to me like AJ Smith just found another reason to pick a fight and Dean Spanos made an impulsive decision that he had to let one or the other go. Great way to run a football team, guys :throwrock:

Schotenhiemer seems to always get the short end of the stick. I thought the Redskins should have given him more than one year especially the way they finished the season under him.

He is a good coach. I do not care about his playoff failures. He has put together good teams every where he has gone. There are so many little things that can cause you do lose a playoff game. If McCree bats the ball down instead of intercepting it and then fumbling against the Pats this year the Chargers advance. Who knows they might have won it all. He had the Browns all but in the super bowl twice when Elway miracles stopped him.

If we needed a coach right now I would take him in a heart beat.
