Carolina Panthers punter Todd Sauerbrun was on the practice field Thursday less than 12 hours after he was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving without an operator's license and speeding.

Team officials said Thursday Sauerbrun will play Saturday against Atlanta. The Panthers will not fine him for his arrest. However, Sauerbrun could still face a fine from the NFL.

Sauerbrun was released from jail early Thursday morning on a $1,700 bond.

According to the Mecklenburg County Jail, an officer spotted Sauerbrun weaving and speeding in his vehicle along South Boulevard about 11:40 p.m. The officer stopped the car and Sauerbrun took a Breathalyzer test. Sauerbrun blew a .19 on the test, a police officer said. The legal limit is .08.

Police said Sauerbrun was going 64 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Initial reports indicated Sauerbrun was leaving a team party at a downtown hotel, but the Panthers denied that. A police spokesperson says Sauerbrun was cooperative during his arrest.

General manager Marty Hurney said Sauerbrun's arrest does not affect his status with the team. The 31-year-old punter has been referred to an NFL program.

One fan who arrived at the practice field Thursday to watch the team said he was disappointed in Sauerbrun's arrest.

    *sigh*

We wouldn't be the Panthers without a little controversy from our players.

I'm saddened by his arrest. I am one of three stupid people in the stadium that wears a no. 10 jersey to every game :( . I'll look like a fool now. :anon:

I bet that Smurfette is jumping with joy since Brun got arrested for DWI!

No. I'd have said 'the fuck does it matter what I think?'

Plus, I look kinda retarded, so they prolly wouldn't ask. They'd think I was one of those rebound stragglers wandering by.

He's 'Disappointed.' I hope Todd gets drunk and runs that guy down.
