Notes: (a) On injured reserve; (b) physically unable to perform; (c) practice squad; (d) cap number is so high because Patriots used bookkeeping maneuver involving "likely to be earned incentives" to use up remaining cap room for 2003 and be able to carry over about $3 million into the 2004 cap; (e) because Stokes was signed during the playoffs, he does not earn a base salary and has no cap charge.

It'll be fine next year, and glad it MOSTLY ALL was a one year cap hit. If you consider we paid him $2.5 million in escalators from his crap year, plus Giblet cost I believe either $9 or $11, and we made the Superbowl with Weinke's pay and also with all the dead money we have, it's actually really good news.

The cap problems that plagued us are pretty much OVER.

Now we need to re-sign the folks we drafted.

Am I correct that only the top 53 of those count against the salary cap?
Or am I thinking about something else?

No. All IR salaries count as well.

Keep in mind that most of the guys who rank high have recently gotten bonuses - Gross got a sizeable bonus, and Peppers was due part two of his signing bonus. Weinke, since he came up, was due a $2.5 mil roster bonus.

He was signed at the end of the season, maybe two games left, so that's a reflection on two or three games' worth of the rookie minimum. I don' tknow if they were smart enough to count his PS money.

Same for Battaglia, minus the part about the PS
