Where are we on the Cap? I thought I read we were 17 million under it.

New Orleans Saints: What will happen with Jimmy Graham?

The rest of the NFL will be watching here. One way or another, the Saints will retain their elite pass-catcher, but how they go about doing so will impact their tight salary-cap situation and could set a precedent for other tight ends moving forward.

More specifically, with relation to the latter talking point: If the Saints have to franchise tag Graham, could he argue for the WR price? That’s been a possibility mentioned for other TEs of Graham’s ilk in recent seasons, and his usage in the Saints offense could move the needle in that direction — landing there would earn Graham about $4.5 million more than if he were tagged as a tight end. Should the Saints ink him to a long-term deal, it likely would be a record-setter at his position.

That the Saints already are projected to be about $17 million over next year’s cap only adds to the potential headaches here. Factor in a franchise tag, even near the 2013 TE price of approximately $6 million, and the Saints’ wallet will be even more overstuffed.

Couldn't happen to a nicer group.

Their shitty GM has been masked by a great coach and great QB. They are coming off a solid looking draft and nice offseason overall, but it's nice that they'll be even more inhibited than the Panthers going forward. Graham will eventually want huge money, obviously.

Pretty fucked. As noted in my thread, a lot of the base salaries go up enormously in 2014. Plus I'm reading that Beason and James Anderson's dead cap count against 2014 when I thought they were all on 2013.

Gman said two more years of cap woes. Said cap strapped/challenged multiple times.

Who knows the real deal with the cap room carrying over to the next season?

Per sportrac there is around 12 but I think 8 of that will be eaten by the Beason trade so likely 4 million carryover

If we send our hate mail to Team HQ would they forward it to hurney for us?

Looks like we will be able to carry about $11.6 million to next year's cap from 2013. We currently have just over $123 million committed to the 2014 cap, which is expected to be around $126 million. So that leaves us somewhere around $14 million under the cap.

And yes, Beason will count $8 million and Anderson will count $2.8 million towards the '14 cap.

I still have no idea (other than 'we keep our strengths strong') what Hurney was thinking about when he negotiated that Stewart contract. Hell, I'm not sure what he was thinking with a lot of these deals. He gave out guaranteed salaries like it was candy.

I'm assuming we cut Godfrey. I think his salary is scheduled to be $5m next year. How much of that would be net savings after accelerating the balance of his bonus?

He's scheduled to make $7.1 mil and would cost $5 mil if cut, so yeah, he's gone unless he gives up some money in a restructuring.
