Gailey gets first interview for O.C. position

    Matt Maiocco
    Press Democrat

Former Dallas Cowboys and Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey will be interviewed first for the 49ers' vacant offensive coordinator position. The 49ers are looking to fill the position after firing Jim Hostler earlier in the week.

Gailey, who turns 56 tomorrow, was fired as Georgia Tech coach on Nov. 26. He spent six seasons with the Yellowjackets, compiling a 44-32 record.

Gailey was last an NFL offensive coordinator for the 2000 and '01 seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He was head coach of the Cowboys in 1998 and '99, where he had a 18-14 record in two seasons before getting fired. Prior to that, Gailey was the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive coordinator in 1996 and '97.

Niners coach Mike Nolan and Chan Gailey worked together on the Denver Broncos' coaching staff in 1987. Gailey has 16 years in professional football.

While Gailey was with the Dolphins, their offenses ranked 26th and 21st in the league in total yards. The Steelers were ranked 15th in '96 and sixth in 1997 under Gailey's direction.

He is the first known candidate to emerge, though Nolan said on his KNBR radio show yesterday that Cam Cameron, Brian Billick and Mike Martz were also candidates. GM Scot McCloughan is on record as saying Martz is not a serious candidate.

    ST. LOUIS --
St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Greg Olson and offensive line coach Paul Boudreau have been fired, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on Sunday.

Mortensen also reported that former Miami coach Cam Cameron, fired after the Dolphins posted an NFL-worst 1-15 record this season, is a candidate to replace Olson.

Olson assumed the play-calling duties from Rams coach Scott Linehan for the final six games of the 2006 season. The Rams went 4-2 in those game.

Linehan took back the play-calling duties from Olson after the team got off to a 0-4 start in 2007.

Boudreau was in charge of an offensive line that was decimated by injuries this season.

The Rams had four offensive linemen finish the season on injured reserve, including Pro Bowl left tackle Orlando Pace, who suffered a torn labrum and torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder in the team's season-opening loss to the Carolina Panthers.

The Rams used 17 combinations on their offensive line this season.

Things got so bad that the Rams were forced to insert three players -- Rob Petitti, Brandon Gorin, Nick Leckey -- who were signed off the street after the season began -- into starting roles.

There has been speculation that several Rams assistant coaches would be fired since the team closed out a 3-13 season with a 48-19 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Rams President John Shaw has committed to bringing back Linehan for next season. Shaw will meet with Linehan in the next week or two to discus plans for free agency and the 2008 NFL Draft.

The Rams' offense, which never got untracked this season, was a big factor in the team's disappointing season.

The Rams ranked 24th among the NFL's 32 teams in total offense this season. They were 25th in rushing and 19th in passing.

Cameron, the offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers from 2002-06, interviewed for the Rams' head coaching job after Mike Martz was fired following the 2005 season.

The San Francisco 49ers also are believed to have interest in Cameron as their offensive coordinator.

The 49ers will interview Martz, fired last week as offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions, today for their vacant offensive coordinator's job.

The Rams also learned this weekend that Linehan and his staff won't be coaching in the Senior Bowl later this month in Mobile, Ala.

The San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders were chosen by the NFL to coach the two Senior Bowl squads. It marked the third straight year that the 49ers have been selected for the honor.
