I'm getting roadrunner finally when I move to Wilmington. There will be 2 pc's in my apt. What's the cheapest way to set this up?

Thanks!!

Idon't know. But I do have a friend named Kate that goes to school down there. She would know cause she has a couple in her place.

I am using an Intel Wireless deal that is working great for 2 PCs. It connects through a USB and you need one for each PC. Then you load the software. The cool thing is you can use a printer on either PC, network etc. I think the 2 units sell for aroun $160 on sale.

You can put another $100 into it and get a linksys wireless hub. You just run your RR modem into that and then to your main PC, from there you simply buy a card or external thing for each PC in the house.

I can't find the pic of my Intel anymore, they may have stopped making it and replaced with this deal... here.

I'll probably go with this if mine stopped working...

Edit, I suggest the Linksys for anybody even if only 1 PC - built in firewall.

windows will do it for you. It's difficult to explain and it doesn't always work...so I'd go with someone else's advice. :xyzthumbs:

Certain versions of Windows can issue individual IP addresses, but Sandy has, in essence, the best suggestion. Get a Linksys, Netgear, or DLink cable modem router with a built in 4-port switch. For the best flexibility, get a wireless one, I guess.

I don't trust wireless; it's a security risk. Then again, we had a computer/bookshelf built in our office to accomodate multiple PC's.

Anyway, the router can serve as a DHCP server so you can have more than 1 PC on the same cable modem connection.

I'm not sure what security risk I have now... my set up now goes like this: Wall to cable modem to Linksys Box. Linksys Box to Personal PC, Linksys Box to Company Laptop. The PC downstairs is through the wireless connection on my personal PC USB intel deal.

I mean the fact that you can't protect wireless transmissions on this kind of set up. I don't know a lot about them, but there are wireless systems that get encryption keys from a central server. I think CMS has one. Anyway, you don't have that assurance on a LinkSys cable modem router.

You probably will never have a problem, though.

Get a NetGear. My friends LinkSys Access Point gave out on him only after 3 months of use. HOW CHEAP!

I just don't want cable and wires running all over the place. Wireless sounds great, but I don't want to get hacked. Didn't you say there was a firewall protection?
