    Panthers | Proehl update
    Mon, 27 Mar 2006 09:47:19 -0800

Updating previous reports, Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald, reports Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney would not dismiss the possibility of WR Ricky Proehl returning despite the signing of WR Keyshawn Johnson. Currently, there is question in regards to whether or not the team carries more than five active receivers.

I would chalk it up to Rozinski stirring the pot. While I like Phroel the fact remains the Panthers had to talk him into coming back last year and apparently this year. Eventually you have to move on. Keyshawn isn't young but he still has skills this team can use. Someone needs to call up Rozinzki and tell him to shut the fuck up and move on as well

We could afford to keep him, as long as we parted ways with Hankton. I like Hank, and appreciate his role on the team, but an aging WR who can contribute in the red zone is more valuable than an aging WR who plays special teams. So it would be reasonable to have Smith, Johnson, Colbert, Carter, Proehl, and allocate a guy to the practice squad. I figue that McCadem could pick up for Hankton on ST.

I have my doubts about this happening, though.

The problem is, with the roster the way it is there's no guarantee that there's a roster spot for Proehl. I think the Panthers don't want to invite him back and tell him he has to fight it out for a spot, when even now he knows full well the younger guys get an automatic advantage. He's only at best going to be available for a year, but you'll have to cut someone, and if performances are even remotely similar the younger guy is gonna be given the nod due to "potential". I think the Panthers like Proehl and don't really want to bring him in if they can't guarantee him a spot on opening day. They feel that wouldn't be right to do him that way.

Good thing is he likely won;t sign with someone else. If we have an injury at WR - he's a phone call away.

Could trade off Colbert, but I doubt there are a ton of takers. Otherwise, there's no room for a million dollar backup.
It sucks, but we got better.

I understand loyalty but it cuts both ways. I simply do not think Proehl provides a very good value at this point in his career. If the Panthers front office is going (it seems they have gone) in another direction I say they are doing the right thing. If Proehl were honest with himself and he may well be I think he realizes this.

I wonder if coaching would interest him.

    Bill,

I was a fan of your roll on the radio while with the Panther organisation. Your contract came due, they didnt resign you and went in another direction, please feel free to move on anytime now.

    Sincerely,

    A Panther Fan

All of our receivers have mentioned the help and guidance they have received from Ricky. It seems like a natural fit. I would like to see it happen.

If Ricky retired and went into coaching, could we bring him back in case of an injury? Just curious.

He did have an uncanny ability to find open spots and really maximized his talent. I have to believe much of this could be taught to the younger guys.:twocents: :woohoo:

The question is whether this would interest him.:1peekdoor Leave the door open to the possibility.
