I remember him a couple years ago being a \"Hot Choice\" for a head coach when he was with the bears but then all the sudden *Crickets**** I wonder why he seems like he has his stuff together.

A lot of his interviews were 'Rooney Rule' interviews.

He's also not a polished speaker. I think he has worked on it and was obviously better prepared to interview by the time he met the Panthers.

another factor is that guys on great teams get hamstrung with not being able to interview. So you get the late crack at a job or two but you're not serious. You might get a shot at it, but you're coming off a playoff loss to 'prepare' the next day for how you'd run a franchise. So you're either ready to do that in June the prior year, or you're scraping shit together.

I think it just happened to line up that the Chargers were out of the playoffs this year, so guys from their O and D came available.

As for his exit from the Bears, I think Lovie got tired of the interviews so he just let the contract expire. Rivera was fantastic there, but they had differences on how that D would be run - they ran a Tampa 2, which is as far opposite Rivera's thoughts as possible.
