Having worked for Fox before, I'm wondering how Dayne for be as an "H" back or FB in our system?

I've always Dayne had more to offer than what his numbers suggest. He could be an Alstott type, or even a feature back, JMO

If Dayne could get his weight down to about 240 or even 235, he might be fairly good at short yardage. The word I've heard is he's got brick hands, so he wouldn't be a very good feature back, even in our offense. He has the build to be a bruiser, but the question has always been if he has that Jerome Bettis/Craig Heyward mentality and desire. From the little I've seen of him, he comes across to me as having a power back's frame with a scat back's mentality without the scatback skill set. I could be way off, though. Like I said, I haven't seen much of him.

I don't see him being as good as Skip Hicks, who we just cut. He's got Hicks' size (and then some), but not Hicks' speed. Frankly I'd rather have Hoover as a power back than Dayne.

would be interesting, but is there room? We're carrying three actual backs right now, and would have to cut Brown to get him.

Now some of you would be jumping up and down at this. After all, he did fumble, and should be immediately shot. But he was a decent #2 - his rushing TDs would have led many Panther teams - and is our only insurance against Foster (and honestly, against Davis).
It's just an odd tossup right now. Dayne's talented, yes. I wouldn't turn him down, necessarily. I just don't know where we'd put him.

    >>The word I've heard is he's got brick hands, so he wouldn't be a very good feature back, even in our offense.

Yes. We throw to the backs, or did, more than to the TE. Of course, that's largely Peete's decision process (remember, he's never played on a team that put the TE as a big part of the O in Detroit or Oakland), and the talent at TE. But either way, Hicks' hands hurt him, as did his ST inabilities (or dislikes) and what some said was a poor work ethic/learn ethic. Dayne has some of these qualities, so immediately, he's got strikes against him. SInce they just cut a guy who was this way, despite his talent, I dunno if we'll be in the market.

I think they tried that in NY -- playing Dayne at FB in front of Barber, and it didn't work out well at all. Apparently he never threw a block at Wisconsin, and there was good reason why.

Ingorance moment. Besides sounding nasty...what is a "scatback"?

Small, shifty guy that catches passes out of the backfield well. Usually a 3rd down back. Dave Meggett was a good one for the Giants back in the day. They're trying to make Warrick Dunn one in Atlanta, I think, and use Duckett as their every down workhorse.

yeah, which is silly. They would've been fine with Dunn, where Lelie or similar receiver would have really helped them out a lot better - or another defensive playmaker other than Brooking, since they really just aren't that talented on D IMO. They can tout it as a strength, that they have two good backs, but the fact is they used Dunn in a power style and he responded well. Now they're making obsolete a player because of a known situation they obviously could've avoided.

It could make the difference between a playoff win - especially if you consider they still need another receiver.
