NFL | R. Williams' Sister Says People Should 'Quit Judging Him' - from www.KFFL.com
    Fri, 30 Jul 2004 10:34:43 -0700

The Associated Press reports Nisey Williams, the sister of retired RB Ricky Williams, says people should stop judging him about his decision to walk away from football. "I'd rather him not be this honest and this candid. But it's his actions and his choice to speak out. Now people are going to have the total wrong idea about him and why he's retiring. After today, I don't even want to defend him anymore because people don't want to listen to the truth anymore. People think he's weird, so that will be the easy answer. They'll believe what they want to believe. But they don't know him and should quit judging him."

    Later on her cell -
“Now Ricky, your favorite sister Nisey wants a BMW 7 Series this Christmas . . . or maybe that Cadillac XLR, in midnight blue. I’ll keep you posted hun.”

It's that "not for long" thing. I've read coaches' stories where they picked up franchises or college programs that they never actually would've taken if they'd known what was awaiting them with suspensions, violations, etc.
I really have to think that's the only real reason that he'd immediately quit after taking the job.

    >>So I can get a $20 million bonus for a one year contract, or a $20 million bonus for a 6 year contract? I'll take the one year please!

Players retire ALL THE TIME in the NFL. Many times with MANY years left on their contract. Bonus money is RARELY paid back.

The only case I can think of where that was not the case was with Sanders. And they had to go to court to get it. And he had just signed a contract fairly recently.

Now Miami may go that route with players. But its a rare case, not normally enforced.

    >>This is about smoking dope plain and simple. He failed his test, he didn't want to deal with the consequences.

Like I said before, it doesn't matter if its to shoot heroin and watch Ren and Stimpy all day. Its his right as an Americian to quit his job.

No, its about not wanting to play football. Let me tell you, Pot ain't even like kicking a cigarette habit. And he certianly wouldn't be the first athlete to get a 4 game suspension. If he wanted to play football, he'd not smoke so close to the start of the season. Or taken the suspension. Anyone, and I mean anyone, can stop smoking weed with little difficulty.

Even the worst drug addicts, you usually have to kick them out. They don't want to stop playing football, thye'll try to hide, go to rehab, the whole bit, lie straight out just to keep playing.

Ricky didn't. so much so, he's giving up millions and millions of dollars, even potentially some of what he's earned.

Is he being selfish? Sure. I wouldn't want to be his dad particuarly. But this quote rings true

So even if he did play, I don't see that they'll be missing that much. Football is an emotional sport. If you don't care, if its just about money, you won't be successful.

    Ricky - On Ricky

From the Obsever - Stan Olson -

    >>>Decision by Dolphin angers Proehl

Receiver Ricky Proehl, 36 and in his 15th season, wasn't happy about Miami running back Ricky Williams' decision to retire at 27.

"It makes you mad," Proehl said. "Because you've got so many guys in this league that never get the recognition, and work their butts off year in and year out. They don't get the big payday.

"And then you get guys that have so much talent, and get opportunity after opportunity after opportunity. He can sit out for two or three years and come back and get a chance and probably get a big signing bonus. It's frustrating. But on the other hand, if his heart's not in it, you don't want him on your football team." <<<<<<
