So I can get a $20 million bonus for a one year contract, or a $20 million bonus for a 6 year contract? I'll take the one year please! You couldn't be more wrong. It is part of the entire contract, which is based on a set number of years. And anyway, articles after the fact in various papers have revealed that he failed his drug tests, so there's nothing anyone can say that this is about him doing what he wants. He fucked up and now he's taking the quitter's way out. Of course the contracts are backloaded, that's how the salary cap works, but he DID SEE his initial bonus that was based on the length of the contract. Like I said, he's not going to get a $20 million dollar bonus on a 1 year contract, so I don't see how you can say that it has nothing to do with the length of the deal. Guaranteed money is one thing, but the team is under the assumption that the player will play the length of the contract to earn that guaranteed money instead of taking it up front and quitting whenever they feel like it. This is about smoking dope plain and simple. He failed his test, he didn't want to deal with the consequences. Like someone said, you could be replaced a lot easier than a guy like Ricky Williams, so comparing some normal job/career to a premiere athlete is ridiculous. He let his team down. He quit because of drugs, no matter how anyone spins it.

And to answer somone else's question, teams already do pay for cutting a player. They don't get the signing bonus back, and in fact, have to take a penalty against the salary cap on it.

Dan Marino accepted and then rejected the Dolphins front office spot within a very short amount of time. Thoughts?

Are you suggesting there might have been a connection? Seems like a bit of a reach.

Dan, I'd agree with, but not Ricky. The scenario doesn't fit. Three time loser on the tinkle test? There are better and more lucrative ways out, if that's what you want.

if Marino knew that Williams was gonna get gone, whether purposefully or by suspension, after he accepted the job? It's very reasonable to suggest that he'd quit because of it. Hell, I probably would.

You really think so? I just don't see it unless Marino has lost every bit of his fire, which I guess is possible. Isn't the FO's collective job to continually build up the team? Sure RW leaving puts them back a fair distance, but one could look at that as job security.
