"It was kind of a doom-and-gloom time for the Panthers organization, so I called Mr. Richardson and asked if I could talk with him, and I said, ‘What's the plan?'" Gross said. "He told me that we were going to hire a defensive (head) coach, get an attacking offensive coordinator and a great QB coach. He told me we were going to draft a quarterback with our first pick and then be aggressive in free agency."

anyone surprised by this ... maybe when he said this Luck was still on the board. i dunno. anyways, it just really struck me that he would tell a Gross this and then Gross would repeat. shows absolutely no confidence in Pickles by either one.

sure I'm surprised. JR is savvy enough to lead the labor meetings out of unrest but I'm told he doesn't make the decisions on his own team, so Gross is lying. That's, I'm told, intellectually dishonest.

We may have a future problem with all the talking coming from the players on this team. I hope this new found freedom to the press that they have doesn't lead to one of them spouting off something that isn't taken too kindly by another team mate or coach. That could ruin some of the euphoric togetherness-Zen-harmony-goodness that everyone at camp seems to be feeling right now and all the reporters are writing about right now.

Ok, I admit it. I'm feeling it too.

The honeymoon will end by the time we kick off the first regular season and reality hits the fan. I still remember Smith spouting off about how much better Davidson's Offense was than Henning's when that was the new news.

I think Pickles was almost purely Hurney seeing a value and going for it- Richardson wasn't involved and Fox definitely wasn't. After the shit show of last year got JR more involved and wanted a different QB. Not entirely surprising.

I think Fox was on board with the pick because of Weis. I think both saw it as a matter of not having to do what we did this year. Or he smiled and went along with it because he had no say, that's possible too. The media acts like it knew that the pair had issues since 09, when reporting it at the very, very end of '10. So it's hard to say what the actual story is.

and besides, no way JR got the least bit involved, right?

I'm sure Richardson spent many hours watching college film and grading QB prospects.

As for Clausen, I still say it's way too early to give up on the guy, but having him thrown to the wolves like that may have irreparably undermined his confidence. If you play a rookie quarterback on a bad offense with a terrible coordinator, you can expect pretty shitty results. In retrospect, maybe I should have seen some of the Brian Brohm / Chris Simms stuff in him.

We have people that break down minutae of tape. I doubt Hurney spent a shitload of time on film either, so if that's the only argument, I remain unconvinced that an owner that was more involved in a law and labor dispute on the entire NFL, didn't lead his own team into or out of the same dispute.

Richardson isn't an absentee owner. He decided the team should let Peppers go, and he wanted Gross back, but it's a little silly to pretend like Richardson has anything at all to do with choosing with scouting college prospects or how much to pay Player X.

and Hurney's always said, he's not a scout. He goes, he gets opinions, but he delegates and gets info. The idea that JR sits back, signs a check, and just passively accepts what Hurney demands is foreign to the idea of who JR even is.

Which is fine. I know your portion of the argument is to assign a blame.
