Oh no! I really appreciated everyone's input and advice. I feel a bit pissed that I went through all of this and was then told that it wasn't really required...I'm a gonna follow that up and whine to Telecom about it. I could have spent a lot of money upgrading (ya'll hush now - I know how to blow things sky high). Anyway - cheers again! :).
Fanks Plu! I'm just answering this now - I loved the imagery of me being knocked off me socks with the high speed thing . BTW - you know I'm gonna have to come back to ask installation questions on the Broadband thing don't ya? :worried:.

dang. the BIOS report is in the setup. the machine is a compaq presario something (it's not mine). has only two slots. we pulled out the old 256 sticks (which worked fine) and put in two 512 sticks. the computer reset on boot up, then booted to the recovery menu. we said boot as normal and it came up with a couple of error messages. then programs started dying and it said it needed to reboot. rebooted via the start menu. reset as it was coming up (during the load screen i think). then started the boot process again and came up lame again (things crashing). checked the memory and it reported 960 (which makes sense now with 64 mb of video ram).

i shut down and took out one stick. rebooted. the thing would NOT load windows at all. rebooted to the bios and the first screen reported one bank empty and one back with 512mb 2100 ram. wasn't sure if it was really able to determine this, so i ignored it. tried to reboot and still couldn't get windows to load. swapped memory sticks (new stick, same slot). rebooted to bios. this time it reported 512mb 2700 ram. booted to xp and checked memory, 448 (which confused me). i can't recall if the machine was stable cuz the 448 had me thinking something was wrong with the ram...

i bought the two sticks together at the same time. they're both labeled the same thing, but they're different from each other. different actual manufacturer of the chips. one says assembled in china, one in the usa. (the china one works). they're sold by kingston, but the working one is "infineon" or something (turns out to be the same memory that came with the machine)...

oy... i think somebody might have bought a stick of 2700 ram and did some funny business with stickers and returned it and i happened to be the lucky guy who bought it...

The real "geeky" reason her pc shows 63 mb of ram instead of 64 is the first mb of ram is committed to DOS.
