The proposed rule would ban that. It says (accd to where ever I read it) that if the player with the radio goes out of the game, no one else can have the radio.

I guess D players' positions aren't as set as the QB position. On O, only QBs can have a radio in their helmet. They want to make sure there aren't many radios on the field at the same time, I guess.

It would be easy enough to assign it to a position. If the QB goes out, his replacement wears one. Assign it to the MLB position or a Safety position.

The main reason for letting QBs wear it is to get plays in from the sideline even when there is crowd noise. I am not sure the defense would need that.

If you assign it to the S position, then you could easily have 3 players on the field with a radio with some situational packages. I don't have a problem with that, but just reading between the lines, I think they do.

Usually, only 1 QB is on the field. There are some teams that have played some kind of slash role, and have had 2, but that's rare. I think it caused a minor controversy when it happened. Someone (Jerry Jones?) objected. I think everyone just ignored it because the rule was well established by that time, and the situation just doesn't come up that often.
