    A coach can immediately change his mind if he realizes that accepting or declining a penalty will hurt his team.



    EDIT: Stl initially declined the penalty, which is why Arizona would have had the opportunity for a free kick

    Changing the call on a coin flip in mid air makes no sense to begin with.


    Officials want the coaches to understand the implications of a penalty, which is why they'll often go out of their way to clarify it with the coach. And because many coaches don't understand the rule book as thoroughly as they probably should, they can ask which option will actually penalize the guilty team. In this case, declining the penalty would have helped Arizona, and hurt St. Louis, so that is something that the league wants to avoid, and rightfully so.

    It's the same for challenges too. I saw a segment on NFL Network earlier in the week on picking up challenge flags. It's happened at least twice already.

    That network may lead to a divorce for me, but I learnt some useless shit from it this week.
