I don't blame him for being disgruntled, he's an artist on the football field and his prime has been largely wasted. Not saying he's perfect, with the past anger management issues and missing crucial practice time due his flag football indulgence (edit: and some crucial drops this year too), but he is the shit and criminally underused really.

I really hope he doesn't ask out.

I think he will request a trade. I might consider it wise, if I were him.

At the same time, much has been made of some "closed door" meeting he had with JR today. If I had to guess (like Gantt, Fowler, Reed do), I'd say they probably had a discussion about money, family, and the CBA, since Smith (if I have my facts right) is the players' rep for this team.

If he demands a trade, we own his rights through 2012, so you--if you wish to be competitive--find a more dynamic, perhaps passionate quarterback that will compliment Smith's fire and help raise up LaFell and Gettis.

I'm certainly no Marty Hurney, but if I was, I'd just:

    1. Draft Luck (or Newton if Luck stays)
    2. Sign a veteran QB with some experience as a starter.
    3. Re-sign Williams, Kalil, C Johnson at the least.
    4. Prior to all of that, hire a coach who will mirror your values, but most importantly, can put together a staff with a history in the league--possibly one of a winner.

I keep getting a taint-tickle for Jeff Fisher. Yes, I know he's like just above .500 career with Houston/Tennessee lifetime. What I like is the fact that he's gone, and Bud Adams being the dumb shit that he is--he'll likely fire most of the staff. Some damn good assistants that could tag along, which is what you would want--a streamlined move. Meeks--I would like, dearly, to keep. But it probably won't happen, in any event. We'll probably lose all of them, either by choice or by Fox.

Fisher has, on defense, Cecil/Washburn/McGinnis. Not saying Cecil's the next JDR, but what he and Fish want to do fits our personnel a hell of a lot better than Cowher, or others.

Alan Lowry has been around forever as an ST coordinator. They have Heimerdinger, who would be superb, but has other issues at hand.

Hell, it's unlikely, but it's as likely--if not more so--than some of the names thrown around on MB's.

Harbaugh--still a good fit. But never overlook the ability to merge a staff that can come together quickly, have a history in the NFL, and a history together.

it would be hard to argue with whether or not Fisher/Cecil/McGinness could get the best of them and add a DT. That would be a hard fucking defense.

That'd be one of the best ways to counter losing every member of our current staff. And he certainly dedicated to the run. It's highly unlikely, but I wouldn't be unhappy. Still, Harbaugh.

There's a slight problem with the Fisher lust.

That franchise has a history of problem players, and recently there's a lot of talk about Fisher coached teams being dirty. It's out in the open, big time, this year.

Unless JR really really did get a demon heart that shit will probably not fly here.

    Would JR even consider him?

Can Fisher successfully adapt to the different standards if he were to come in?

Lot of NFC East fans said Fox was dirty. Partially because Greg Favors sat on McNabb in the title game.

Hell, it's a reach. I'm still with Mags on the Harbaugh train, but dirty or not, it's time to start contending and winning. I'd rather have Fisher and his staff and run the risk of being called "dirty", than have slapdick coordinator-du-jour and be very bad at everything.

    While we're ranting.

Carolina, unbelievably, is still ranked in the top-10 in a pretty important defensive statistic:

    Yards Allowed Per Play.

    5.1

This puts them 7th, 3rd in the NFC. Only 0.1 yard behind the Bears.

Not trying to overstate this one, but considering they're on the field upwards of 33 minutes per game, with no sustainable drives from the passing game, this is a pretty damn good thing to hang your hat on.

I'm sure it will end up on Fox's next bio page, wherever that whore ends up.

Most fans would say that, probably me included, question is JR. He wouldn't want that as far as I can tell. I do believe Fisher could be a good get but OTOH he has had some very poor seasons, which I wonder if our fan base would tolerate.

I really think we need to get an offensive guy at the helm, who will hire a great DC, and cede total control to him.

edit: after reading your subsequent post, I'd be glad for Meeks to stay on.

I gotta agree, I know he has his negatives, but he is one of the few that you know wants to win, and is gonna get in other players shit about it. It's really hard to know if he didn't do as well this year because of losing a step, the QB play or both, but I would guess 80-90% was the QB play.

I haven't seen Steve as indifferent at all. Frustrated beyond belief and maybe accepting the fact that there'll be no change in team competitiveness this year, but indifferent, not at all. Someone complained he celebrated catches as "SB winning", but I think that's just Steve getting excited about having a ball come his way and a positive yardage play. I mean there was a play Sun when Gettis was wide the hell open deep and on 3rd and long we throw to the guy who's not even close to the marker.

Like the fans going nuts when we finally MADE a 1st down. Paper called it jeering, but speaking only for the fans in my general area, we were just celebrating ANYTHING positive. Fan base is so beat down, the normally asshole-ish Falcon fans did no taunting or jeering of any Panther fan in my area. Seriously, we were cheering "Hey we made a yard and still have the ball". Sad really.
