I went and read some posts about Carr on the Texans message board and most of them seem to get a chuckle out of the fact that so many fans outside of Houston, who haven't watched Carr play weekly, think he's so good because of the numbers.

Just like Mangus, they were pointing out how he was behind and had to pass alot and that many of those completions either came in garbage time or were short dump offs that didn't amount to much.

They are split on the guy...many of them still feel like he got the shaft because he didn't have the talent around him but the consesus seems to be that he doesn't have IT, which, ironically enough is what Jake is known for.

None of this changes my mind about wanting him here as a back up and maybe even a starter down the road but, it's naive to think he's going to come here and take over just because Jake didn't have his best showing last season.

You mean kind of like the odds on another Dan Morgan concussion? Or the odds on another after 1 month (which is what happened last season Jax pre-season then Atl)?

I'm not wanting to argue on the ability of our staff to treat injuries. But I haven't found 1 statement from the team that Jake is back to 100 %. All I found were the general pre-game comments that he looked OK in practice. I'm not a "NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS" type. I want the team to tell me something. Tell me why the half-hearted attempts to sign an acceptable back-up. Tell me why we need to spend the cash on one of these guys who we hope will never take the field unless we are expecting that he may have to.?

Okay, my bad. I had the two mixed. Still, that's pretty darn close.

Regarding the turnover difference, give Jake those three games back, and I guarantee he'd have more INTs than Carr (11 vs. 12), especially considering how he gave away games in the fourth quarter last year. Granted, Jake had significantly fewer fumbles, but he also was only sacked half as much as Carr. Another 20+ sacks on Jake could easily have made up the difference.

Plus, Carr was learning a WCO on the fly and IMHO he's not a WCO quarterback. He was doomed to struggle anyway.

I don't understand where the conflict is. They didn't announce that he was back to 100% because he wasn't, at the end of the season. There's really no reason to report anything about it now unless it HASN'T healed.

Also, why do you assume that they are being half hearted about signing a back up QB and why are you insinuating that it's not worth spending a decent amount of money on one? Did you not see what happened when Jake couldn't play?

I'm basing most of my opinions based on his college career, because HOU did little in the way of developing him. He's shown flashes, but hasn't had the chance to do much of anything else.

That isn't all on Carr, though. Houston's defense has been garbage (except for Robinson and Ryans), so it's no wonder they've had to start in a hole so much. And I defy any QB in this league to flourish with that OL, that defense, in the first five years of an expansion team in a division with IND, TEN, and JAX.

I'm not saying he's an immediate upgrade over Jake. I'm not even 100% sure he can get back to being a starter-caliber player. His confidence has to be pretty shaky ATP. But what I am saying is that he may have enough inside him to challenge Jake in a year or two, and I still think he's the best prospect out there.

Carr came to Houston with "it". I think the whole team's been frustrated because of the losing records, and that always takes a toll on the QB, regardless of how much of the blame is actually his. I don't know if he still has "it", but if he's anything like he was in college, he's got enough to lead the Panthers as well as Jake ever did. Not better, but just as well.

They are split on the guy...many of them still feel like he got the shaft because he didn't have the talent around him but the consesus seems to be that he doesn't have IT, which, ironically enough is what Jake is known for.

We're not acquiring all of Houston, we're just after him. No, he's not 100% to blame, but he's got his issues. Which is fine, but the "Delhomme is doomed" stuff can go.

It sounds like we pretty much agree. Who knows?...sitting for a year and watching from the sidelines may be just what the guy needs. No matter what your opinion of Jake is, he is a leader and he works hard to prepare himself...maybe that's what Carr needs to learn.

    QB Carr arrives today
    to visit with Panthers

THOMAS B. SHEA - US PRESSWIREFree agent quarterback David Carr will spend two days in Charlotte visiting with the Carolina Panthers, according to a league source.

Free agent quarterback David Carr will arrive in Charlotte later today to begin a two-day visit with the Carolina Panthers, a league source confirmed early this afternoon. Carr will spend all of Tuesday with Panthers coaches and officials.

Carr, 27, is one of several players Carolina is interested in as a potential backup for starter Jake Delhomme. And since Delhomme will be 32 this season, Carr has the potential upside the Panthers are looking for as a possible successor to their current starter.

Carr was the No.1 overall pick in the 2002 draft, going to the expansion Houston Texans. But playing behind a weak offensive line, he was sacked 76 times as a rookie, and an average of 50 times a season through his five years as a starter. Despite that, he continued to improve, and his passer rating topped 80 in two of the past three seasons.

"He's a tough son-of-a-gun," was how an NFL scout described him recently. Carr completed a career-high 68.3 percent of his passes in 2006.

Carr is also believed to be interested in Seattle, with other possible options as well.

Carolina is also interested in former Detroit quarterback Joey Harrington, the No.3 overall pick in that same draft class of 2002. Harrington played with Miami last year.

Whoever signs with the Panthers will replace Chris Weinke, who was released recently.

    Strike Raiders off Carr's list

Raiders | Carr not thrilled with Raiders opening
    Sun, 1 Apr 2007 15:17:25 -0700

Steve Corkran, of the Contra Costa Times, reporting for the Sporting News, reports free-agent QB David Carr will probably not join the Oakland Raiders unless he is unable to find a better situation elsewhere. Carr isn't thrilled about the idea of joining a team that likely will take a franchise-type quarterback in this year's draft.

I can't see why many of you are writing off Harrington. By the virtual one-sidedness of this "debate", it sounds like Carr was given the keys to 1987 Yogo and Harrington was given the keys to a stretched 6-door Hummer with a jacuzzi in the back. Granted the Texans were a expansion franchise, but they benefited from multiple extra draft picks for the next few years. Dertroit was, is and, unless things change in hurry, future broken organizaton perennially doomed somewhere under mediocrity. All the first round draft picks on WRs begs the question: where did Detroit inject talent on the OL? As in Carr's case, it's hard to be an effective QB on your back. My point is Harrington had nearly as rough of a caeer in Detroit as Carr had in Houston. I just don't understand the free pass for Carr just because Houston was a worse team (not by much in my view) than Detroit.
