I am having a devil of a time with some software called WinFixer popping up wanting me to download it. I have run adaware, Spybot, Yahoo Anti Spy and cleaned things up. I have 2 pop up killers (Earthlink and Google) and it closes them down and trys to get me to down load it. Is this in the registry? What's next to do

This method seems to work best for me.

    1. Download and install (a) MS Antispyware, (b) Lavasoft Ad-aware, & (c) Spybot Search and Destroy
    • Just of note, You might want to remove Yahoo Spyware blocker. I've heard more bad than good.
    2. Check for updates on all of those.

    3. Update your virus scan software to its latest.

    4. Disable system restore.

    5. Reboot in to safe mode.

    6. In safe mode run in this order. Ad-aware (do a full scan and make sure to check next to Search for low risk threats), Spybot S&D, then MS Antispyware (once again do a full scan. Smart scans are fine for regular maintenance, but for a good cleanup job a full scan is necessary). On all scans remove the spyware, don't quarantine it.

    7. Then open MS Antispyware and go to Tools > Advanced Tools > System Explorers. In there on the left hand side click Start Up programs and see what programs are set to run on startup. Remove those that cause spyware. This can also be done in msconfig. You may want to use http://www.sysinfo.org before you've entered Safe Mode in order to see what each of these startup programs do.

    8. Once you've done this click the arrow up top in MS Antispyware that says go back to Advanced Options. When in there go to IE BHOs and check that for anything that doesn't belong. Also check IE Settings and IE Toolbars the same way.

    9. In Advanced Tools you may also want to check in Browser Restore to make sure none of your search or default pages point to spyware sites. Simply restore those to the defaults and you can manually change them later if you don't want the MSN sites.

    10. Run a virus scan for good measure, but if you've chosen to do a full scan on Ad-aware and MS Antispyware, and you have a Virus scanner that's worth a damn, then any viruses that you might have will already have been detected.

    10. After all of this reboot in to normal mode and recheck system restore. Hopefully at this point you'll be clean. This has worked 100% of the time for me.

Google "remove winfixer" and it's the #1 hit.
