PC Anywhere

A couple of questions for those that are a little more internet/network knowledgable. My wife is now getting to work out of the house from her place of employment. She has a copy of PC anywhere she wants to hook up so that she can access her work computer. He work place ( a large church, she is finance manager) has no firewall (I know that is getting taken care of) has a seperate server (Windows NT) so that several PC's can access similar files. I am running a DSL and Windows XP. How hard is this going to be to make it work? Her works IT says not very but I am a little skeptical.

I have a TCP/LAN connection but use PCAnywhere for dial-up networking. It's easy to set up, but works very slowly. If they have an option to use your DSL as the connection, go with that. It's relatively straightforward to set up.

There's a way in windows 2000 and 2000 server to have remote logon. Let's refresh my memory and I'll get back to you on that....

You are talking about terminal server connection, comes with W2000 server. She can use that but it won't show her desktop like pcanywhere would but it would be just like logging on at the server. She would need rights to log on locally though.

VPN

I think someone is talking about VPN or Virtual Private Network. She is running 98 at work which I "think" has this. Loaded PC Anywhere today and it is working like a champ. DSL at home helps alot. Any suggestions about firewalls and how will it effect using PCAnywhere? I was leaning towards Black Ice

Not sure what port PCAnywhere uses but make sure it is open on the firewall and you should be fine.

If she wants to control her PC, use something like PCAnywhere. If she wants access to her PC, then a VPN tunnel will have to be set up on the church firewall. She'll have to access the PC's via their IP addresses, since netbeui isn't routable. The home PC will need a VPN client to access the firewall at the church. As for PCAnywhere type access, I concur with SemperFi.

VPN comes in handy for support. I use it frequently at home for system support.

Use Norton Personal Firewall, as it works hand in hand with PCAnywhere. They're both Symantec products.
