The average length of a running back is 2.57 years, and the average length of a regular player is 3.3. But that doesn't mean a lot, because teams tend to carry more running backs than other positions. Look at the Panthers just going into this year. We've got CMC, Alex Armah, and Elijah Hood at 1 year, CAP at 3, Kenjon Barner at 5, and Fozzy Whittaker and Travaris Cadet at 6. That's an average of 2.86, which is slightly above the league average.

If you look at starters, particularly starters who were drafted in the first round and played right away, then you're looking at a career length of around nine years.
