You've already argued against it yourself.

I've said WR is a lower need, but it's not stupid.

I dont see it as a top need right now. And Newton seems to have given Smitty an extension on his NFL career.

But are we gonna wait for him to actually retire before we bring in his replacement.

If were gonna continue with the build thru the draft philosophy we need to be thinking about making a move.

Say Rivera stays and we continue to win out and are sitting in Keenan Allen draft territory. You think that move isnt gonna be a possibility.

Not saying I advocate it, just saying he's a Cal guy too. And considering we used 3 WR sets like 70% of the time it fits Chuds philosophy better than a 100 mill backfield we underuse.

You've argued that the obsession with "taller/bigger targets" is stupid, or at least made fun of people for doing it. You've also posted repeatedly that the team has already burned far too many draft picks on WRs, to the point that some guys have to be cut.

How is a "taller/bigger target" going to be a Smitty replacement? LaFell and Olsen are already effective "big" targets. If the receiving corps could use anything, it's a reliable speedy guy. But right now, wide receiver is probably the third lowest need on the team behind running back and quarterback. Teams like the Saints and Giants have also done well with undrafted free agents.

We've been investing in speedy guys the last couple of years, Pilares and Adams. I have actual hopes for Adams.

Only thing we haven't invested in is a fat WR.

Not talking a direct/similar replacement. Im talking about a guy talented enough to the #1 guy when he does retire. Not too many Smittys come along in a lifetime.

Agreed it doesnt have to be a top pick or a top FA. But the odds of finding a Cruz, those odds have got to be slim, slimmer than finding a UDFA RB id imagine per say.

Agreed about the need too but what happens if we win out and Star, Hankins, Jones, Joekel, Warmack, Matthews, Mongomery, Mango and other top favorites are gone. Since you deem no QB worthy of going top 10 that does seem a possibility.

You can have size and speed in the same player, Allen seems a nice combination of alot of good traits.

I've suggested that Smith to the slot...
you know what, let's just leave it at this. I don't really want to draft a receiver. I definitely don't want to draft one high. But just the generic idea of acquiring random tall receiver isn't "stupid" and while I disagree with a high draftee, that's not stupid either.

I want to invest in our lines. Control LOS and games are a lot easier to win.

The notion that you need one is misguided. I posted recently that the Packers, Giants, and Saints have dominating passing attacks not by funneling everything through one person but by spreading the ball around, and only the Giants have a first round receiver (with Nicks being a late one). I also posted statistics showing that throwing the ball to Steve has been no more effective this season than throwing the ball to LaFell. There have definitely been times in this franchise's history where they had garbage at wideout and wouldn't have any passing game without Steve or Moose, but that isn't the case now.

    No.

    Agreed.

    Abso-fucking-lutely.
