Panthers sign Lamar Smith

It seems that Jay Glazer thinks we have a starting RB now. I think it will be an open competition.

Smith took some heat last year... hell he couldn't do jack against us. Man I hated typing that.

I never saw much speed out of him but he's a good inside runner. No dollar figures are given but it sounds like we got him cheap.
 
I don't like this signing, but I did say before that Mongomery was expendible if we signed someone. Goings is likely to be gone, unless Brown really screws the pooch?
Still need to draft a RB at some point.
 
We sure have a lot of depth at back-up RB now, so all we need is a starter and we'll be set.


I work with a Dolphin fan. The day they got Williams he was picking on me telling "Lamar Smith is available...hahaha"

Then he had a few choice words under his breath about his days in Miami. I welcome the guy with open arms. I feel he's the best we have now at RB. I'm still hoping for Foster or Portis.

Don't worry. I'm still being patient.

I don't believe that's the case, that we still NEED to get a back. Do we have a future need? Yes. Do we have in place the best possible current setup? no. Do we have two starting level backs who can run between the tackles?

We sure do. And that's as good as it gets right now. Bigger fish to fry.
 
I kinda get the idea that Smith is here as a stop gap... now EVERY sign is pointing to the Panthers drafting purely Defense in the first few rounds... we keep Smith here with Huntley(whose contract is up after this year... I doubt he's resigned) and we use them this year and HOPE to get a strong back next with a high draft pick... basiacally they may have desided it will be easier to find a CB or DT in the draft than it will be in free agency... so they get their RB need from free agency... smart move IMO... this team isn't being built to win the Super Bowl next year... they are laying a solid foundation for 3 and 4 years down the road... and you'll see a few temps picked up to fill voids that you might find it hard to understand but they are only here to fill the void as a warm body
 
That's a GOOD contract

It's basically 700k. The bonus is pennies, if he sucks, we whack his ass this year, and that's that. Hell - Montgomery cost $450K, you telling me Lamar isn't worth $700?

I'd rather have mack strong - but if you're gonna sign an older guy, this was the way to do it.
 
totally agree mag. wondering if we would have done this if it wasn't for ra's neck. back to d on day 1. i was getting a bit excited about a rb with our 2nd until i heard about the disc.
 
So we got Lamar Smith at a little over 1 mil a year? If so, that sounds like a pretty good bargain to me for 1000 yd rusher.
