    5-2 and 3-4 look pretty much alike in my mind. You're just more likely to move one of the tackles around.

    and the 3-4 evolved from the 50 defense, which was basically a 5-2.

    Nah, they're somewhat different in their positioning and personnel: 3-4 vs. 5-2 In any case, the 4-3 over has the linemen in basically their usual 4-3 positions.
