Carolina Panthers cornerback Ricky Manning is in Chicago tonight and soon could receive an offer sheet from the Bears, according to a league source.

Manning is a restricted free agent and the Panthers would have the right to match any offer sheet he signs. They would have seven days to make a decision once an offer sheet is signed. If the Bears signed Manning to an offer sheet and the Panthers decided not to match, Chicago would have to give Carolina a third-round draft pick.

Manning, a third-round pick in 2003, excelled in the post-season as a rookie and was a starter in 2004. But his lack of height and inability to be a strong run defender prompted the Panthers to sign Ken Lucas in 2005. Manning spent last season as the nickel back and likely would fill the same role with Chicago.

Somebody was probably gonna go for it. Wonder what kind of poison pill they'll put in there.

That could be interesting. All of the sudden cornerback becomes a need.

Honestly there is a good chance that he would end up our 4th corner anyway. If the deal is bigger than about 1-1.5 per I would let him go and collect the draft pick.

I think they got Howard because they saw this coming. Not necessarily that they foresaw the Bears, but that they believed Manning wouldn't be back.

Bye Ricky. I'd take a third and draft his replacement

Since he will be gone after this season and we will get nothing I would take a third rounder for him and be happy. Howard can probably handle the nickel job fairly well.

seriously. Don't have to put in poison pills. Howard and a draftee is more than good enough depth. I believe Manning is a bit better fit for the nickel, but I don't think we end up losing anything there and Howard might make a little bit better starting depth God forbid something catastrophic happen.

Problem is, can't find a 4th CB/KR I like enough outside Hester to campaign for.
