NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has consistently stated that he's troubled by late-season games in which teams that have already clinched a playoff seed decide to rest their top players rather than play to win.

As a result, Goodell said today at the annual league meetings, he's hoping to arrange the schedule so that the last two weeks of the season are heavy on games featuring divisional opponents playing each other.

"It is still an issue and I spoke to the Competition Committee about it on Sunday," Goodell said. "One of the key things we're doing in the short term is in our scheduling. We're trying to schedule, potentially, Week Seventeen will be all division opponents. And maybe even a large part of Week Sixteen.

Wish they'd simply do it similar to HS. Team that wins coin flip chooses to go first or second. First team gets the ball on 40 yrd line. They try to score. (Time isn't an issue.) Once team one scores or turns it over on downs, the ball goes to team two. If team two can score they tie. If they don't they lose. If a team chooses to kick a field goal they risk the other team scoring a TD and passing them.

I think they should schedule non-conference games in the last week of the season to prevent teams from playing each other two weeks in row

It's all about the wild cards by week 17 anyway

There will be this huge controversy all season long after the first OT game in the regular season... and everybody will be wanting to see the format played out in the play-offs and it'll never happen :lolly:

The scenarios about how the NFL's new overtime rules for postseason games can play out are confusing. And here's one more situation to consider:
The margin of victory under the new rules could be nine points. (Credit to PFT's Mike Florio for uncovering the wrinkle.)
Here's how: The rule calls for both teams to have an opportunity to posses the ball. If Team A receives the kickoff and responds with a field goal, Team B will also receive the ball by kickoff.
If Team B then throws an interception, Team A can return the pick for a touchdown -- and a nine-point margin of victory.
The rule calls for the game to end when Team B commits the turnover, but not until the play is whistled dead. So the intercepting player could also take a knee to end the game with a three-point margin of victory. -- Sean Leahy
