My boss has outlook 2000 and is getting the following message:

"The message interface has returned an unknown error. If problem persists please restart outlook."

Message pops up every 3 messages he sends or so.

Any ideas as to what could be causing it?

not really enough info. It could be a number of things. With it being an unknown error its hard to say. Your best bet is to start by covering all your bases by running an updated virus scan. Also check for Spyware etc. when you do this, its not what I think would cause it, but you never know what some of that shit does. Then go to http://officeupdate.microsoft.com and make sure all the updates are installed. If it still isn't working you may want to do a repair on Office. To do that put the CD in and run the setup program. It should offer a repair option.

He could have a problem with the post office file. So he runs a repair, just like you suggested.

I'll second that concept - Outlook errors are COMMONLY caused by other applications, even other MSFT ones, stomping all over the MAPI files that Outlook depends on. MAPI (Messaging API) is commonly used by a lot of products, including possibly your AV solution if it ties into scanning e-mails as they are delivered on the desktop, fax and other stuff as well. If anything of that sort has been added/upgraded about the time the problem started up, that's likely your source. Regardless, the fix is as Math noted. Hell, I think Outlook XP and newer even check for MAPI problems and automatically fix them, this was so common...

    Good luck!
